Job summary

BlackSky in Seattle, WA is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Mission Management team responsible for autonomous satellite operations planning and orchestration of imaging activities. You will mentor engineers, set roadmaps, coordinate with flight ops, product and program leadership, and drive reliability while delivering rapid iteration.

The role emphasizes leadership, architecture, and collaboration to ensure high-quality software and mission readiness, with a strong focus on safety

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, statistics, or related computational field.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including distributed, autonomous, or mission-critical systems.
• ≥2 years of experience leading engineering teams with formal leadership responsibilities.
• Strong programming background in Go, Python, or C++, with architectural guidance.
• Experience deploying microservices in cloud and on-prem Kubernetes-based systems.
• Understanding of CI/CD, automated testing, version control, and ops best practices.
• Ability to manage priorities and deliver results in fast-paced environments.
• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration.
• U.S. citizen may be required for some programs.

Responsibilities

• Build and lead the Mission Management engineering team for autonomous satellite operations planning.
• Drive prioritization and planning across Mission Management projects to align with business goals and commitments.
• Partner with flight operations, flight software, ground software, mission planning, systems engineering, product, and program leadership to clarify requirements and priorities.
• Provide technical direction and architectural guidance for orchestrating constellation activities.
• Improve engineering processes including design reviews, code reviews, testing, safety, and operational readiness.
• Foster a healthy on-call culture and support live systems, including incident response and root-cause analysis.
• Drive roadmap planning, resource allocation, and execution across multiple projects.
• Hire, onboard, coach, and evaluate engineers emphasizing skill development and collaboration.
• Perform other leadership tasks as required to ensure team success and mission.
