Job summary

GitLab is seeking an Engineering Manager for Architecture Engineering: Async. You will lead a distributed team of Site Reliability and Backend Engineers, balancing production reliability with platform projects, including Redis upgrades and new deployment models.

You will drive the migration to a durable workflow engine and own the team roadmap, working with partner teams to optimize capacity, incident response, and operational excellence across GitLab.com.

Qualifications

• Experience leading an engineering team delivering high-performance systems.
• Experience with site reliability engineering and backend engineering.

Responsibilities

• Lead, hire, and grow a team of site reliability engineers and backend engineers, supporting career development, promotions, and onboarding.
• Own reliability for the job processing and caching platforms, including SLAs, error budgets, alerting, and reviews.
• Manage capacity planning, support escalations, and incident follow-ups, balancing operational work with roadmap projects.
• Run the team's on-call rotation and serve as incident commander for high-severity incidents.
• Drive zero-downtime Redis upgrades and automate OS patching and reboots.
• Adapt job processing to run in single-tenant and cell-based deployments.
• Own migration from queue-based orchestration to a durable workflow engine with a clear roadmap.
• Own quarterly planning and the team roadmap, clarifying responsibilities with partner teams.
