Job summary

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Engineering IT Shared Services seeks an IT Specialist to provide end-user workstation, application, and system support for the Grainger College of Engineering, including classrooms and research computing.

The position is full-time Civil Service, primarily on-site with potential for hybrid work. Salary ranges from $57,700 to $65,600 with benefits, and applications are due by August 19, 2026.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Four (4) years of work experience in IT-related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field.
• College coursework that includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the conversion table.
• Experience working in a customer service environment.
• Experience in workstation management on Windows, Macintosh, or Linux environment.
• Experience in the administering of Microsoft Active Directory, LDAP, or other directory services.

Responsibilities

• Delivering excellent customer service by responding to requests in person, on the phone, or via email in a timely, polite, and professional manner.
• Working on a team of IT professionals supporting the instructional, research, or administrative customers of the Grainger College of Engineering.
• Working with units, teams, and individuals to provide the unique technological needs for their instructional, research, and administrative technology environment.
• Working to build relationships with customer community by proactively communicating relevant information and discussing their needs, initiatives, and service levels through periodic meetings.
• Working to resolve customer satisfaction issues.
• Planning, research, purchasing, and installation of IT systems and products (hardware/software deployment).
• Analyzing functional and performance issues and implementing corrective actions.
• Consulting with customers on installation and use of software applications, including interfaces with network connections and optimizing systems for best performance.
• Providing network connectivity assistance, administering and auditing local building networks, and managing DNS and DHCP for departmental networks.
• Advising and assist in the use of varied computing and communications technology.
• Providing hardware quotes for purchasing and consultation.
• Interacting with various teams to ensure outstanding service delivery.
• Supervising student/hourly employees and mentoring junior staff when needed.
• Implementing centralized services and aligning them to unit needs.
• Working within cross-functional teams.
• Managing projects at divisional or team level and driving deliverables by deadlines.
• Completing assigned tasks on time with quality.
