Reviews product systems, associated support equipment and facilities, functional specifications and operations, and establishes safety requirements for assigned systems. Independently analyzes and recommends safety criteria in system design, equipment and procedures to control or eliminate hazards. Develops safety documents as required to support customer and test/operational range requirements. Performs audits of operational areas and reports effectiveness of system safety program. Participates in accident investigations involving damage to products or related facilities and assists in identification of causes and corrective actions. Evaluates the interrelationship of system safety requirements and other aspects of concept design and development requirements to ensure the most cost effective program.

**Job Summary**

Northrop Grumman Defense System Sector is seeking a System Safety Engineer 1/2 to join our team in Rocket Center, WV, near Cumberland, MD. The Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL) in Rocket Center designs, develops, and manufactures tactical rocket motors, medium caliber ammunition, composite components and end items, and fuze and electronics equipment. The dedicated team at ABL supports national security efforts by developing defense systems for DoD customers and U.S. allies.

**Position Summary:**

  • Safety engineers ensure compliance with DOD, OSHA, and NFPA standards, performing safety evaluations for manufacturing and maintenance involving energetic, combustible, and flammable materials.
  • Proactively manage risks to prevent injury, illness, or health issues and promote a safe, healthy workplace.
  • Evaluate manufacturing permitting programs related to hot work, confined space, LOTO, and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with Hazard Analysts, Process, Tooling, and Design engineers, and Operations to support manufacturing activities.
  • Conduct incident investigations and prepare reports.
  • Lead or consult on safety projects in design, development, and manufacturing.
  • Assess and manage EHS risks based on hierarchy of controls.
  • Review and defend EHS standards and rules at all review levels, including executive leadership.
  • Develop working knowledge of MIL-STD 882, DoD 4145.26M, DoD 6055.9, OSHA, and NFPA regulations.

**Qualifications:**

  • **Level 1:** Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Fire Science, Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Manufacturing; safety experience in manufacturing or support roles.
  • **Level 2:** Bachelor’s with 2+ years of experience or Master’s degree in Safety, Fire Science, Industrial Hygiene, Mine Safety, or Energetic engineering; experience in industrial safety, hygiene sampling, or process safety management.
  • Strong multitasking, problem-solving, organizational, communication, and mechanical skills.
  • Knowledge of CAD software and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to obtain a Secret security clearance (US Citizenship required).

**Preferred Qualifications:**

  • Master’s in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Science, or Chemistry.
  • Knowledge of MIL-STD 882, DOD 4145.26M, DoD 6055.9, OSHA, NFPA regulations.
  • Experience with energetics, industrial hygiene sampling, toxicology, hazard communications, and safety training development.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, manage multiple projects, troubleshoot tools, and work off-hours if needed.
