Job Description

As an ALSAC Cloud Data Engineer III, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable data processing software, data models, pipelines, transformations, databases, and supporting cloud infrastructure. Using the latest AWS cloud technologies and tools, you will develop data engineering solutions, optimize big data pipelines, and ensure security, compliance, and operational efficiency. Collaboration with leadership, Data & Analytics teams, IT Architecture teams, and other stakeholders is essential to create a cloud-native data infrastructure that enhances business value, accelerates insights, and supports donor acquisition and operational excellence.

You will act as a strategic member of the Business Intelligence (BI) Cloud Platform team, mentoring junior engineers, recommending reference architectures, and promoting best practices in data lifecycle management, security, privacy, and cloud migration strategies. The role requires a mix of technical expertise, analytical problem-solving, and the ability to communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences, including non-technical business partners.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Data Infrastructure Development: Develop and maintain data processing software, dimensional data models, big data pipelines, transformations, and databases using AWS services (e.g., Redshift, S3, Glue, Athena, Lambda) and tools/languages like Kafka, Spark, Airflow, Python, dbt, CData.
  2. Cloud Architecture Design: Lead the design of cloud-native architectures, adopting AWS services (e.g., RDS, EMR, EC2, DMS) and hybrid strategies for on-premise-to-cloud migrations, including phased cutovers. Experience with migrating from Microsoft SQL Server to AWS is preferred.
  3. Strategic Consultation: Provide guidance to Data & Analytics, Data Science, IT leadership, and business partners on cloud architecture, data protection, scalability, and infrastructure needs. Collaborate with Data Governance frameworks.
  4. Data Optimization & Analytics: Build and optimize large datasets and pipelines to support analytics, data science, and performance metrics. Conduct root cause analysis for improvements and focus on quality engineering.
  5. Mentorship & Leadership: Mentor Data Engineer I and II, sharing knowledge on data platforms, SOPs, and best practices.
  6. DevSecOps Implementation: Advise on automation, testing, quality assurance, compliance, and data protection for cloud, hybrid, and on-prem workloads.
  7. Stakeholder Collaboration: Work with data, design, product, leadership, and IT teams to resolve technical issues, align strategies, and improve data access for insights.
  8. Risk Mitigation: Identify and mitigate risks related to data strategy, privacy, and sustainability, ensuring compliance with AWS security services (e.g., IAM, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, KMS).
  9. Innovation & Trends: Research emerging technologies and trends to support innovation and automate data tasks.
  10. Communication: Effectively communicate the value of cloud tools and architectures to all audiences, including producing written insights for leadership.
Job Requirements
  • Proficiency in SQL for development and analysis.
  • Expertise in data modeling, warehousing, and pipeline optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services (e.g., Redshift, S3, Glue, Lambda) and tools like Kafka, Spark, Airflow.
  • Strong knowledge of API integration, ETL/ELT processes, and data lake ecosystems.
  • DevOps experience with CI/CD, source control, and deployment techniques.
  • Knowledge of big data tools, databases, and workflow management (e.g., Kafka, Spark, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Airflow).
  • Understanding stream-processing systems and scripting languages (e.g., Spark-Streaming, Kafka Streams, Scala, Python).
  • Leadership in growing the cloud engineering practice at ALSAC.
  • Bachelor's Degree with 5-8 years of relevant experience.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills; self-motivated and team-oriented.
  • Experience with dbt, Apache Airflow, CData, SageMaker, SQL Server 2019+, and security frameworks.
  • Additional AWS knowledge (e.g., CloudTrail, DynamoDB, EMR, SQS, SNS, Kinesis, KMS).
