Job summary

RK&K's Virginia team is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to support transportation, transit, and environmental projects across the region, including bridges, slopes, pavements and utilities. You will oversee subsurface programs, perform design calculations, and prepare reports while coordinating with multi-disciplinary teams.

Ideal candidates have 2+ years of geotechnical design experience (VDOT preferred), and familiarity with VDOT MOIs and AASHTO interfaces.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • 2+ years of Geotechnical design experience; VDOT experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of VDOT Geotechnical and Pavement MOIs and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification.
  • Proficient with geotechnical/pavement design software and field operations.
  • EIT certification preferred or obtainable within 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with geotechnical/pavement design and delivery in Virginia.
  • Assist with client relations to secure future workload.
  • Foster innovative design concepts to enhance project efficiency.
  • Serve as the Geotechnical Engineer on a variety of projects.
  • Develop and oversee subsurface exploration programs.

Job description

We are looking to add a Geotechnical Engineer to our Virginia team. Join us in supporting diverse transportation, transit, and environmental projects such as highway and rail bridges, buildings, retaining walls, slopes, pavements, ground treatment of soft soils and subgrades, and utilities. Ideal candidates possess VDOT and Virginia municipal experience, proactive problem-solving skills, a solid grasp of geotechnical principles, and hands‑on expertise in geotechnical/pavement design and field operations. You'll collaborate across disciplines, helping to prepare plans and reports for various geotechnical and pavement projects, supervising field investigations, performing design computations, and writing reports and offering recommendations. Essential Functions

  • Assist our geotechnical/pavement design and engineering group throughout Virginia with development and delivery of geotechnical assignments
  • Assist with client relations to secure future clients and workload
  • Foster innovative design concepts related to Geotechnical Engineering to enhance project efficiency
  • Serve as the Geotechnical Engineer on a variety of geotechnical related projects
  • Develop and oversee subsurface exploration programs
  • Prepare design calculations and geotechnical engineering reports
  • Aid in producing construction documents, specifications, and construction cost estimates

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
  • 2+ years of Geotechnical Design Experience (VDOT experience preferred)
  • Knowledge of VDOT Geotechnical and Pavement MOI’s and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification
  • Understanding of the following software: Microsoft Office, gINT, LPile, APile, MSEW, Slide, Settle 3, Slope/w, AASHTOWare Pavement ME, GRLWEAP
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • 5 years of Geotechnical Design Experience (VDOT experience preferred
  • MS or advanced degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering preferred
  • EIT certification is preferred or ability to obtain within 6 months
