Job summary

RK&K is seeking a driven Traffic Engineer in our Richmond, Virginia office. You will join a large team of traffic engineers and transportation professionals, performing analyses and designing improvements to enhance transportation systems in the region.

You will work on projects that improve operations and safety for motorized and non-motorized modes, with opportunities to contribute in the office and in the field.

Qualifications

  • FE exam passed or able to take within 12 months.
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a Traffic/Transportation focus.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Self-motivated with strong attention to detail.
  • Able to work independently and in a team.
  • Excellent writing, verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Provide traffic engineering support for projects ranging from small-scale studies to complex highway solutions.
  • Prepare design plans for traffic control devices including signals, signage and markings, and ITS.
  • Perform field investigations, collect data, evaluate safety and operations for all road users.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports and design plans.
  • Communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.

Job description

RK&K is seeking a motivated and creative Traffic Engineer to join our highly successful traffic group in our Richmond, Virginia office. Come join and design your career as part of RK&K's talented Traffic team!

As a Traffic Engineer with RK&K you will work alongside and collaborate closely with one of the largest, most talented groups of traffic engineers and transportation professionals in the industry. You will play a crucial role within our team, performing traffic analyses and developing traffic engineering designs to improve transportation systems throughout the region, and will complete tasks both in the office and in the field as needed. Our projects focus on improving operations and safety for motorized and non-motorized modes of travel, providing healthy and livable communities, and implementing technology-based transportation improvements. Under the supervision of a professional engineer, you will:

Basic Functions:
  • Provide traffic engineering support for projects ranging from small scale studies and design for isolated intersections to complex solutions forComplete Streets corridorsand major highway systems.
  • Prepare design plans for traffic control devices including traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, temporary traffic control/work zones, lighting, design of bicycle and pedestrian facilities, toll systems, traffic calming,and Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS).
  • Perform field investigations, collectand compile traffic data, evaluate traffic safety and operational conditionsfor all road users,anddevelop recommendationsfor improvements.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports, presentations, and design plans
  • Communicate technical information to non-technical audiences
RequiredSkills andQualifications:
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) exam OR have the ability to take and pass the FE exam within 12 months of employment
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field with Traffic or Transportation focus
  • Proficient knowledgeofMicrosoft Office products(Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Self-motivated with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Exceptional writing, verbal communication and presentation skills including public speaking
  • Valid driver's license
PreferredSkills andQualifications
  • Classwork in traffic engineering
  • Participation in professional societies (ITE, ASCE, ASHE, etc.)
  • Prior internship experience in Traffic or Transportation Engineering
  • Working knowledgeofMicroStation/AutoCAD,GIS, GuideSIGN, AutoTurn, Synchro,Vissim, HCS
  • Exposure to trafficengineering references (MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual, AASHTO guidelines)
