Job summary

Groundswell is seeking an AI-focused engineer to translate business problems into end-to-end technical solutions for federal engagements. This hands-on role includes discovery, design, build, validation, and operational deployment, with autonomy and leadership responsibilities.

You will lead requirements conversations, choose appropriate AI patterns, and build robust capabilities with prompts, tooling, and interfaces, while mentoring others and communicating clearly with clients.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building and shipping production software.
• At least 1 year integrating large language models with apps and retrieval-augmented generation.
• Own a capability end to end from ambiguous requirement to production.
• Experience evaluating AI system quality with metrics and test sets.
• Strong programming in Python, TypeScript, or SQL across full application lifecycle.
• Lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders.
• Explain tradeoffs between accuracy, cost, latency, and complexity.
• Excellent written communication for client-facing docs.
• Work independently through ambiguity and drive delivery with minimal direction.
• Willingness to teach and develop others.
• U.S. Citizenship required.

Responsibilities

• Lead requirements conversations with business and technical stakeholders, covering workflow, decisions, and acceptance criteria.
• Define the technical approach and defend it; select the AI pattern appropriate to the problem.
• Recommend against AI when a simpler solution is better; consider rules, processes, and interfaces.
• Define measurable success criteria before building, including accuracy targets and thresholds.
• Build the complete capability end-to-end: prompts, retrieval, tooling, APIs, data handling, and UI.
• Develop evaluation sets from real data and iterate based on results.
• Make architecture decisions balancing quality, cost, latency, security, and authorization.
• Operationalize capabilities in the client environment with governance and monitoring.
• Mentor engineers new to AI through code review and guidance on patterns.
• Maintain current knowledge of models, tooling, and reusable patterns for the team.
• Move between client delivery, internal product work, and internal enablement as needed.
• Produce documentation describing capabilities, limitations, validation, and failure handling.
