Job summary

Abilities First, Inc. seeks a dedicated Special Education Teacher for the LaGrange School program in Poughkeepsie, NY. The role uses an integrated services model to assess student needs, develop curriculum, and coordinate classroom support staff. Certification for Grades 1–6 is required.

Schedule: Monday–Friday 8:00 am–3:30 pm, 35 hours/week, 48 weeks/year (includes a 6-week summer program). Pay ranges based on degree: $52,624–$53,684 with a Bachelor’s, $57,684–$58,684 with a Master’s.

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Special Education with NYS Teaching Certification.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or related field with graduate-level coursework in Special Education and NYS Provisional Certification or Certificate of Qualification.

Responsibilities

• Assess each student’s current level of performance using standardized and non-standardized tools.
• Plan and implement age-appropriate instructional programs aligned to individual needs.
• Write IEPs, monthly progress notes, and weekly lesson plans.
• Maintain a neat, structured classroom environment to support learning and safety.
• Coordinate classroom support staff to implement each student’s IEP and therapy goals.
• Supervise students and assist with mobility and daily activities as needed.
• Facilitate collaboration with related services (OT/PT/Speech) to execute goals.
• Attend staff meetings and share knowledge with the team.

Education

Master’s Degree in Special Education with NYS Teaching Certification
