Job summary

Abilities First, Inc. seeks patient, energetic Teacher Aide for the LaGrange School program located in Poughkeepsie, NY. This role supports an interdisciplinary team, assisting with classroom activities and daily student needs.

Schedule is Monday–Friday 8:00 am–3:00 pm, 32.5 hours/week, 48 weeks/year (includes a 6-week summer program). Pay range is $17.08 – $19.08 per hour, with benefits and opportunities for growth.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required
• Experience within early childhood and Special Education (preferred)

Responsibilities

• Follows the classroom schedule ensuring that individual student’s goals are achieved.
• Assists in the classroom to conduct individual and group activities.
• Keep student’s workstations/areas organized.
• Assist in the construction of teacher-developed materials.
• Attend and participate in staff meetings and job skill training.
• Attend therapy sessions with students to allow for appropriate carryover in the classroom.
• Assists in the organization and arrangement of the classroom in order to provide a conducive learning environment.
• Escorts and assists students to and from school buses while promoting independence.
• Attends all specials with students (PE, art, music, etc.).
• Take off and put on outdoor clothing to promote independence.
• Perform wheelchair/equipment transporting, transferring and lifting.
• Toilet children and use adaptive equipment as necessary (at least 3 times daily).
• Change clothing when wet or soiled.
• Change diapers and/or sanitary napkins as necessary.
• Set out lunches and adaptive feeding equipment and provide opportunities for independence.
• Cut up or mash food as required for meals.
• Feed students following OT procedures and promote self-feeding.
• Wash feeding equipment and promote independence in washing dishes.
• Put on and remove AFOs and other supports.
• Lift, place, and secure students from boards.
• Set up computers and adaptive equipment.
• Adhere to Code of Legal and Ethical Behavior and safety policies.
• Perform other job-related activities as requested.
