Job summary

VEG ER for Pets in Commack, NY is seeking an Emergency Veterinary Assistant to join our fast-paced team. You will triage patients, support treatments, and collaborate with credentialed technicians and veterinarians across anesthesia, imaging, and critical care.

This role offers growth through guided training pathways, CPR training, and a supportive learning environment in a high-volume emergency hospital. Nights, weekends, and holidays may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Enrolled in AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program a plus.
• 1+ years in a veterinary assistant role (emergency or specialty experience is a bonus).
• Basic computer skills and EMR software familiarity.
• Excellent communicator with pets and team.
• Fine motor skills for handling patients and equipment.
• Ability to stand for prolonged hours; lift up to 25 kg alone, 40 kg with assistance.

Responsibilities

• Be the first warm welcome, triage incoming patients, and guide them toward care.
• Assist with treatments, nursing care, and diagnostics, including bloodwork and imaging, catheter placement, and oxygen support.
• Work with credentialed technicians and veterinarians on anesthesia and sedation cases.
• Set up and manage IV fluids, blood transfusions, and medication administration.
• Support care in outpatient or inpatient settings, from exam room to treatment area.
• Join rounds and maintain continuity of care; learn CPR and RECOVER Certified Rescuer training.
