We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Emergency Vehicle Mechanic who participates in the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of machinery and equipment with a combination of fire and vehicle repair experience to join our team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of 20 engines, 4 ladder trucks, 3 heavy rescues, 23 ambulances, and 4 fire and rescue boats.
The ideal candidate will perform difficult, skilled work, participating in and supervising the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of machinery and equipment for the Fire and Rescue Department. Work will be performed under the general supervision of the Captain of Fleet Services.
The hiring range for this position is from $47,278.40 - $65,020.80 based on experience.
The full salary range for this position is $47,278.40 - $82,742.40 to provide opportunities for growth and development.

We are looking for a highly skilled and detail-oriented Emergency Vehicle Mechanic who meets the following qualifications:
- Experience & Expertise: Proven experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, ideally with emergency response vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks, or police vehicles. Knowledge of emergency vehicle systems, including electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical components, is essential.
- Technical Skills: Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities to quickly identify and resolve issues with emergency vehicle systems. Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Certifications: Relevant certifications (e.g., EVT Level 1 certification) are required.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to perform precise and thorough inspections, ensuring vehicles meet all safety and operational standards.
- Problem Solving: Ability to work under pressure, effectively managing time and resources to minimize downtime and ensure vehicles are ready for emergency service
- Communication & Teamwork: Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with other technicians, fleet managers, and emergency services personnel
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy components and work in various environments, including outdoor settings, under demanding conditions.

Examples of Duties
As an
Emergency Vehicle Mechanic, your primary responsibility will be the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of machinery and equipment to ensure all emergency vehicles are maintained, repaired, and fully operational at all times. You will be tasked with conducting necessary repairs to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicles used by first responders.
Key Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To
- Vehicle Maintenance:
- Maintain and repair department vehicles and equipment.
- Perform regular inspections and preventive maintenance on emergency vehicles to ensure they meet operational standards and safety regulations.
- Repairs & Diagnostics:
- Diagnose and repair issues with engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and other critical components.
- Troubleshoot and repair department vehicles and equipment, including ladder trucks, pumpers, tanker trucks, brush units, ambulances, and varied firefighting equipment.
- Inspect, test, and diagnose various systems and components, including both gasoline and diesel engines, ignition, computerized engine controls, cooling, charging, emissions, fuel, fire pumps, aerial apparatus, and mandated NFPA pump testing.
- Emergency Response Readiness:
- Ensure all emergency vehicles are ready for immediate deployment.
- Test vehicles and equipment to ensure readiness for use.
- Record Keeping:
- Maintain detailed records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance performed on each vehicle, ensuring compliance with regulations and manufacturer guidelines.
- Maintains logs and records of all work and costs associated with duties.
- Understand and interpret vehicle specs, shop drawings, and maintenance manuals.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with other team members and the fleet manager to prioritize repairs and coordinate maintenance schedules to minimize vehicle downtime.
- Coordinate, monitor, and inspect work performed by outside service providers.
- Emergency Support:
- Respond off-site quickly and effectively to emergency vehicle breakdowns, providing repairs or arranging towing as necessary.
- Transports vehicles and equipment to and from outside service providers.
- Safety Compliance:
- Follow all protocols and procedures while working on vehicles, ensuring all tasks are performed safely and efficiently.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable standards, policies, and procedures.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the installation, repair, and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components of fire & rescue equipment;
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work;
- Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade;
- Ability to effect field and/or shop repairs on a wide variety of electrical, mechanical, and control equipment;
- Ability to analyze and troubleshoot sophisticated machinery and controls;
- Ability to follow oral and written directions;
- Ability to work under adverse conditions;
- Ability to prepare estimates of materials and equipment required for repair work;
- Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and 2 years of experience in the repair and maintenance of fire/rescue vehicles, automotive/mechanical repair/maintenance & diagnostics and vehicle/equipment operation; supplemented with 5 years of previous experience and/or training that includes mechanics or automotive/mechanical maintenance, automotive/mechanical diagnostics, fire/emergency vehicle repairs and vehicle/equipment operations.
Special Requirements
- Possess a commercial driver's license (CDL) valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia;
- Possess Fire Apparatus and Ambulance Emergency Vehicle Technician Level 1 certification;
- Must obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician Driver Operator 1 Inspection certifications.
- Must obtain and maintain Emergency Vehicle Operation Level 3 certification within six (6) months of employment;
- Possess, or obtain within one year of employment, basic first aid certification and CPR.
- Must be able to be in anywhere within Stafford County within one hour after receiving a call for service after normal business hours while on call.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment
This is medium work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
