Job summary

This position is with the Veterans Health Administration, located at the Ralph H Johnson Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Charleston. The incumbent serves as an experienced telephone operator on the medical center switchboard, working rotating shifts and handling a variety of calls.

Responsibilities

• Monitors alarms and initiates emergency call procedures as required.
• Operates audio and radio paging systems to contact staff on call during all hours.
• Establishes conference call connections for key medical center personnel.
• Maintains accurate listings of patients and staff for information and routing.
• Keeps on-call roster of physicians and other personnel and alphabetical employee lists.
• Handles a variety of difficult calls requiring extensive seasonal involvement.
• Retrieves and updates information in computerized databases per guidelines for customer assistance and record keeping.
• Work schedule consists of rotating 8-hour shifts, 5 days a week with weekends/holidays; not virtual.
