Job description

An employee in this class performs emergency medical procedures at the certified level, performing professional advanced life support work in operating an approved mobile medical unit, rescuing victims, and performing advanced emergency care, including administering life-sustaining treatment to patients on-site while en route to area hospitals. Work involves responding to the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls, applying necessary medical treatment to sick or injured persons, and transporting persons to a medical facility. Employees serve as a member of a response unit and are responsible for the medical care administered to the patient. Work requires considerable independent judgment in assessing the condition of patients and applying short-term relief. Employees are exposed to the normal hazards of emergency rescue work, including the risk of exposure to human body fluids and infectious diseases; thus, the work is subject to the OSHA requirements for bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed in accordance with established EMT and medical procedures and under departmental and local medical director-approved protocols.

Pay is based on certification level: emergency medical technician (paramedic, advanced, basic).

Responsibilities include:

  1. Responding to 911 calls for non-emergency and/or emergency medical assistance and operating emergency vehicles to transport patients.
  2. Providing initial medical assessment by taking vitals and administering basic life support treatment to patients; assisting paramedics in advanced life support treatment and dispensing medication in accordance with established procedures and medical protocols.
  3. Completing forms and incident reports concerning events and activities to ensure all patient medical care is documented.
  4. Maintaining a clean base and ambulance.
  5. Ensuring the proper functioning of the emergency medical vehicle, all emergency medical equipment, and adequate supplies of inventory on the vehicle; reporting damage or non-working equipment.
  6. Communicating and coordinating with agencies that provide mutual aid.
  7. Providing outreach education in the community and emergency medical service at community events.
  8. Using computer applications or other automated systems such as calendar, e-mail, and database software in performing work assignments.
  9. Adhering to the department’s safety rules, regulations, and protocols; using assigned Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required by protocol and OSHA guidelines.
  10. Performing other duties as required.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Graduation from High School or General Educational Development (GED) test equivalency.
  2. Possession of North Carolina EMT certification OR National Registry EMT certification to qualify for the legal recognition process is required.
  3. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver's License issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

All offers of employment are conditional upon successful clearance of a pre-employment drug testing, background check, and Fitness for Duty assessment. Employment cannot commence until the employee has been cleared. Participation in the County Drug and Alcohol Screening program is required.
