Job summary

Union County, NC seeks an Assistant Director of Emergency Management to lead a comprehensive preparedness and response program, coordinating with public, private, and nonprofit partners while exercising independent judgment in emergencies.

You will develop agency plans, oversee the Emergency Operations Center, facilitate training and exercises, and guide budgeting and performance measures. Strong supervisory experience and FEMA/NIMS certifications are highly valued.

Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree required with seven years in emergency management or related field.
• Master’s degree preferred; radiological emergency preparedness experience a plus.
• Valid Driver’s License and safe driving history.
• Completion of FEMA NIMS courses; IS-100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800, IS-2200, IS-2901.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise staff within the Emergency Management division.
• Develop agency‑level emergency preparedness plans and hazard mitigation strategies.
• Coordinate EOC operations and inter‑agency responses during incidents.
• Oversee budget development and performance measures; maintain COOP and continuity planning.
