Job summary

The State University of New York's Office of Emergency Management is seeking a motivated Student Assistant to serve as a GIS and Data Intern in Albany, NY. This role provides hands-on experience applying GIS to real-world emergency management and public safety challenges.

You will work under the Director of Emergency Management, supporting GIS tasks, dashboards, and data gathering using ArcGIS Online, Python, and AutoCAD, with a flexible 20-hour per week schedule starting in November.

Qualifications

• Current full-time enrollment at a SUNY campus.
• Proficiency with Esri ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
• Experience with GIS research and analysis methods.
• Hands-on GIS software experience from internships or class projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication for teamwork and reporting.
• Ability to work independently, seeking guidance when needed.
• Experience with data collection using on-screen digitizing, GPS fieldwork, and coordinate geometry.

Responsibilities

• Apply GIS technology to business problems under guidance from the Director of Emergency Management.
• Support Office of Emergency Management and System Operations staff with GIS tasks to boost productivity.
• Use AutoCAD, Python and other programs to assist dashboards and data gathering.
• Create public safety maps, applications, and dashboards utilizing ArcGIS Online.
• Prepare and deliver presentations; attend relevant meetings.
• Assist with the planning and coordination of GIS projects, such as asset tracking.
• Participate in file and record management tasks.
• Provide general support for other emergency management activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Provost for Student Affairs.
