Job summary

The City of Norwalk is seeking a Telecommunicator to receive emergency and non-emergency reports by radio or telephone, assess priorities, and dispatch units via radio, phone or intercom. You will use CAD systems and coordinate with departments to ensure rapid response.

Applicants must complete certification as a Telecommunicator and Emergency Medical Dispatcher within one year, and obtain COLLECT and NCIC within one year; CritiCall and background checks are required.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Dispatch experience preferred.
• Must obtain Telecommunicator and EMD certifications within one year.
• COLLECT and NCIC certifications within one year.

Responsibilities

• Receive emergency and non-emergency reports by radio or telephone.
• Set priorities among messages and determine transmission order.
• Transmit messages to appropriate units and agencies.
• Dispatch equipment and personnel to locations needing service.
• Monitor radio frequencies and CAD terminals or systems.
• Maintain logs and files.
• Assist in on-the-job training of new personnel.
