Job summary

Mercy Hospital St. Louis – Emergency Department is seeking a Patient Access Representative. This role handles registration, insurance verification, and financial clearance to ensure accurate patient data and a smooth entry into the ED.

The ideal candidate demonstrates exceptional customer service, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced hospital environment. Evening shift with communicative teamwork and compliance with EMTALA/Medicare standards is expected.

Qualifications

• HS diploma or GED required.
• 1–3 years of customer service, registration, or clerical experience preferred, healthcare exposure is a plus.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance plans is helpful.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced Emergency Department environment.

Responsibilities

• Greet patients and visitors with professionalism and courtesy and register them.
• Verify demographic, insurance, and guarantor information accurately.
• Ensure patient records are identified with at least two identifiers.
• Facilitate timely patient access while maintaining service quality.
• Collect signatures and consents required for treatment and billing.
• Balance cash drawers and document all payments accurately.
• Refer patients to Financial Assistance or Medicaid resources when appropriate.
• Protect patient privacy and comply with HIPAA and regulatory standards.
• Meet productivity, quality, and revenue cycle goals.
