Job summary

Mission-Community-Hospital in Los Angeles seeks an experienced Emergency Department Financial Counselor to assist patients with insurance verification, financial screening, and payment arrangements.

You will verify eligibility, obtain authorizations for ED admissions, assist with Medi-Cal and charity care, and explain financial policies to patients and families. The role requires strong communication and customer service skills, with bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Qualifications

• 2-3 years hospital financial counseling experience preferred.
• Knowledge of Medicare, Medi-Cal, HMO, PPO, EPO, Managed Care and commercial insurance.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred, but not required.
• Must complete AVIP/Fire Card and AIDET training.

Responsibilities

• Conduct patient financial screenings and interviews.
• Verify insurance eligibility, benefits, copays, deductibles, and patient responsibility.
• Obtain authorizations for ED admissions, inpatient, and BHU.
• Assist with Medi-Cal, Charity Care and financial assistance applications.
• Establish payment plans and cash-rate arrangements.
• Maintain accurate registration and financial records.
• Perform daily audits of ED accounts.
• Explain hospital, state, and federal financial policies to patients and families.
• Support and train Registration staff as needed.
• Provide excellent customer service to patients, families, physicians, and staff.
