Job summary

The City of Gilroy is recruiting for the Public Safety Communicator Trainee in the Police Department. This full-time, at-will position trains to become a Public Safety Communicator and supports 24-hour emergency response for police, fire and medical calls.

Ideal candidates have strong customer service, communication and computer skills, and can work weekends and varied shifts. Training lasts 6–12 months with opportunities for advancement and certification within a year.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or the equivalent (GED).
• Must successfully complete the City of Gilroy Public Safety Communicator training program in 6–12 months.

Responsibilities

• Answer emergency and routine calls for Police, Fire, and medical assistance.
• Dispatch appropriate units and equipment; monitor and relay information.
• Work shifts including weekends, holidays, nights and evenings.
• Maintain complete and accurate written records of calls and transmissions.
• Operate teletype, computer and recording equipment; perform routine maintenance.
