Job summary

City of Whitehall, OH seeks a Communications Operator (Police Dispatcher) to receive emergency and non-emergency requests, assess urgency, and initiate police or EMS action using a CAD system. The role requires initiative and sound judgment dealing with stressed or aggressive individuals.

As part of the Administrative Services Bureau, you will work with field units, monitor response, and serve as the primary link between officers and citizens.

Qualifications

• U.S. citizen
• Valid Ohio driver's license
• At least 18 years of age on hire date
• High school diploma or GED
• Typing at least 30 wpm
• Able to pass background investigation for Substance Free Workplace
• Must complete LEADS training and maintain LEADS certification
• Must complete CCH training and maintain certification
• Must complete any certifications required by law
• Must have taken and passed Civil Service Communication Operator/Dispatcher examination

Responsibilities

• Answers the 9-1-1 emergency phones and processes calls for service.
• Determines nature and location of emergencies; prioritizes and dispatches units.
• Maintains communication with assigned units.
• Operates CAD and LEADS systems and other communications equipment.
• Answers business phones, assesses needs and directs assistance.
• Assists citizens, victims of crime, business representatives, and other agencies.
• Accesses and enters data in local/state/national databases as needed.
• Assists lobby customers and other staff as needed.
• Maintains order and integrity of the Police Communications Center.
• Monitors the Police building to ensure doors and areas are secure.
