Job summary

Public Safety Telecommunicators in Birmingham support the city by receiving emergency and non-emergency calls, entering details into CAD, and directing information to dispatchers. This role operates in a call center with multiple monitors, phones, and radios, and requires the ability to work 8- or 12-hour shifts, including nights and weekends.

Work involves monitoring CAD, coordinating with emergency responders, and providing information and referrals to citizens.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a customer service-oriented position.
  • No felony convictions or misdemeanors involving violent offenses or issues of moral turpitude.
  • Willing to submit to a general and criminal background check.
  • Willing to work an 8- or 12-hour shift on any shift or day (e.g., nights, weekends, holidays) and overtime as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Answers and manages calls to allow effective communication and response of emergency responders (police, fire, EMS) for citizens during emergency situations.
  • Provides information and referrals to citizens and public safety personnel for non-emergency situations.
  • Operates a technology-based work station with multiple monitors, software programs, phones, headsets, and alarm boards to receive, forward, and monitor calls.
  • Enters information from emergency calls into the CAD system while gathering incident details.
  • Transfers calls to appropriate dispatcher and monitors relay of call to ensure information is received.
  • Communicates with external agencies to provide information regarding citizen requests.
  • Monitors local conditions and updates dispatchers via CAD to keep responders informed.
