Job summary

Lightmatter, based in Boston, MA, is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to join our photonics-focused team. You will develop firmware for optical transceivers, handling control, telemetry, diagnostics, and stabilization in collaboration with hardware and photonics engineers.

You will own firmware components through full lifecycle—from requirements to release—working with C/C++, Python, and embedded debugging tools, in a hybrid workplace that values innovation and hands-on problem solving.

Qualifications

• Experience delivering firmware to production hardware or customers.
• Proficiency in C or C++ on resource-constrained targets, with Python for prototyping.
• Solid understanding of embedded buses (SPI, I2C, GPIO, UART) and HW-SW co-integration.
• Hands-on lab debugging using JTAG/GDB, logic-analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
• Familiarity with Git and build toolchains such as CMake.
• BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent, and 2+ years of embedded software engineering experience.

Responsibilities

• Develop the lifecycle (requirements, bring-up, testing, release) of optical transceiver firmware modules (control, telemetry, diagnostics, monitoring).
• Implement and refine photonic control and stabilization loops on embedded targets with design teams.
• Partner with hardware engineers during board bring-up using oscilloscopes, logic-analyzers, JTAG, and GDB for debugging.
• Participate in control and diagnostics design reviews, documenting findings for cross-functional teams.
• Operate independently with guidance at key project milestones.
