Job summary

Vatn Systems is seeking an Embedded Firmware Engineer (Mid-Level) to design, develop, and maintain firmware for autonomous underwater vehicles. You will work across bare-metal, RTOS, and embedded Linux, writing C, C++, and Go, and bring up new hardware while ensuring robust low-level software for demanding maritime conditions.

The role involves board bring-up, driver development, and integration of sensors/actuators with real-time control and telemetry.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience.
• 3–5 years of professional embedded software/firmware development experience.
• Proficiency in C and C++ for embedded microcontrollers (bare-metal/RTOS).
• Experience with STM32 microcontrollers and embedded Linux platforms.
• Hardware/software integration, debugging with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG/SWD.
• Experience with UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet communications.
• US citizenship or permanent residency; ability to gain security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain firmware for AUVs across bare-metal, RTOS, and embedded Linux environments.
• Develop system-level software/services in Go, C, and C++ on embedded boards.
• Bring up new hardware: board bring-up, bootloaders, device drivers, BSPs.
• Implement/debug inter-subsystem communications over UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet.
• Integrate sensors/actuators and real-time control/telemetry paths.
• Optimize firmware for performance, memory, and power usage.
• Collaborate with EE/ME/autonomy teams to translate requirements into firmware.
• Write/maintain unit and integration tests; support HIL testing.
• Participate in code reviews and upgrade firmware in field environments.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and upgrade firmware on-vehicle.
