Vatn Systems in Bristol, RI, is seeking an Embedded Firmware Engineer (Mid‑Level) to design, develop, and maintain firmware for our autonomous underwater vehicles. You will work from bare‑metal to embedded Linux, coding in C, C++, and Go, bringing up hardware, and owning low‑level software for reliable operation in harsh maritime environments.

Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and autonomy teams, write tests, participate in code reviews, and help optimize power, memory, and performance

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
• 3–5 years of professional embedded software/firmware development experience.
• Strong proficiency in C and C++ for embedded microcontrollers (bare‑metal and RTOS).
• Experience with STM32 microcontrollers and STM32CubeMX/HAL or bare‑metal programming.
• Experience with embedded Linux; hardware/software integration; clocking, schematics, and datasheets observation.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain firmware for embedded microcontrollers (bare‑metal, RTOS).
• Develop system‑level software/services in Go, C, and C++ on embedded Linux boards.
• Bring up new hardware: board bring‑up, bootloaders, device drivers, BSPs.
• Implement and debug communication across UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet.
• Integrate sensors and peripherals; implement real‑time control and telemetry paths.
• Optimize firmware for performance, memory, and power usage.
• Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and autonomy engineers to translate requirements into solutions.
• Write and maintain unit/integration tests; support hardware‑in‑the‑loop testing.
• Participate in code reviews and continuous improvement of engineering practices.
