Job summary

Roku is seeking a Software Engineer, Build Systems, to join the Developer Experience team within the Advanced Development organization. In this role, you will design, implement, and operate the build systems that bring together every component of Roku's embedded software products — including set-top boxes, televisions, and soundbar speakers — and get them running on resource-constrained hardware.

Qualifications

• 2+ years in build systems engineering or related role.
• Experience designing and operating complex build systems in monolithic and multi-repo environments.
• Experience with embedded build tooling including OpenEmbedded, BitBake, Bazel, Make, and CMake.
• Proficiency with Bazel at production scale, including remote caching and cross-compilation sandboxing.
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate in an agile environment.
• Graduate degree or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and operate complex build systems across monolithic and multi-repository environments, spanning Bazel and BitBake/OpenEmbedded paths.
• Build systems that integrate all components of Roku's embedded software, running on resource-constrained hardware.
• Enable and adapt the build infrastructure to integrate with AI agents and automation tools for autonomous workflows.
• Provide embedded software architecture input to ensure products work within storage, memory, and processing constraints.
• Collaborate with software teams to deliver feature enhancements and bug fixes for engineers who depend on it.
• Interpret build system output to guide development goals and unblock teams.
• Iterate on build processes to improve reliability, speed, and developer experience.
