Job summary

The Department of Business & Industry is recruiting for Safety Specialist, Elevator positions within the Mechanical Compliance Section of the Division of Industrial Relations. Roles may be filled in Reno or Las Vegas, reporting to the Elevator Safety Supervisor, performing inspections and investigations under safety and health laws and codes.

Incumbents promote safety practices among Nevada businesses and provide technical assistance to designers, constructors, owners, and service organizations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, occupational safety and health, law enforcement, fire science, construction management, or closely related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Associate's degree with one year of related experience as described.
  • High school diploma with two years of related experience.
  • Experience in specific Nevada State roles or equivalent.
  • Two years in Maintenance Repair Worker III or equivalent.
  • All combinations indicating qualified education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled work in the inspection of elevators, escalators, moving walks, dumbwaiters, personnel hoists, and related equipment; provide technical assistance to a variety of professionals.
  • Conduct shutdown and operating inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards; open/close conferences with management; inspect and report on equipment areas; issue notices of violations and recommended fines; prepare inspection reports on permits issued, withheld, or revoked.
  • Investigate accidents and complaints; interview witnesses, inspect equipment, determine cause and correction; issue fines or suspensions as appropriate; prepare reports.
  • Provide technical assistance in response to inquiries about code requirements, maintenance, or operational problems with equipment.
  • Perform related duties; under supervision, trainees may progress to higher levels after training and performance.
  • Under supervision, receive training and progression is possible after meeting minimum qualifications and with recommendation.

Education

Bachelor's degree in engineering, occupational safety and health, law enforcement, fire science, construction management, or closely related field
Associate's degree in engineering, occupational safety and health, law enforcement, fire science, construction management, or closely related field and one year of experience in the building trades, industrial operations and/or mechanical trades
High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience as described above
One year of experience as an Architectural/Engineering Drafter II, Compliance Investigator I, Electrician I, Engineering Drafter III, Engineering Technician III or Maintenance Repair Specialist I in Nevada State service
Two years of experience as a Maintenance Repair Worker III in Nevada State service
Equivalent combination of education and experience as described above
