Job summary

The City of New York's Department of Buildings seeks an Elevator Inspector to enforce NYC Construction Codes and Zoning for elevators, escalators, and related devices, reviewing plans and witnessing safety tests.

Under general supervision, you will issue violations, verify licenses, maintain records, testify in hearings, and may supervise staff. Shifts may include nights and weekends; a NY driver license is required.

Qualifications

  • Five years of full-time experience in elevator assembly, installation, repair, or design.
  • Three years of experience plus two years of formal training in related fields.
  • Three years of experience plus sixty credits towards a relevant degree.
  • Completion of a three-year apprentice program in elevator mechanics or inspection.

Responsibilities

  • Perform technical inspections of elevators, escalators, and related devices for compliance with NYC Construction Code, Zoning Resolution, and approved plans and specifications.
  • Respond to, report, and investigate accidents, incidents and complaints for conformity with applicable laws and rules.
  • Witness safety tests on high-speed elevators.
  • Issue violations, summonses and stop work orders.
  • Verify licenses of onsite workers and explain violations.
  • Testify at ECB, depositions, and court as needed.
