Job summary

The NYC Department of Buildings seeks an experienced Elevator Inspector to ensure safety and compliance of elevators, escalators, amusement rides, and related devices in New York City. You will conduct inspections, witness tests, and enforce violations while upholding the NYC Construction Codes and department rules.

You will respond to accidents and complaints, review plans and licenses, and maintain thorough records.

Qualifications

• Five years full-time experience in the actual assembly, installation, repair or design of elevators.
• Three years of experience as described in the first item, plus two years of formal training or education in elevator installation, repair or design.
• Three years of experience as described in the first item, and sixty (60) credits towards a related degree.
• Completion of an apprentice program in the elevator trade with two years of experience or related education or 60 credits as described above.
• A professional engineer or registered architect license.
• Education and/or experience equivalent to the above.
• To be eligible for Assignment Level II, at least one additional year of experience after meeting minimum requirements.
• To be eligible for Assignment Level III, at least one year of supervisory experience after Level II.

Responsibilities

• Performs technical inspections of construction, alteration, and safety of elevators, escalators, amusement rides, and related devices for conformity with NYC Construction Code and rules.
• Responds to, reports and investigates accidents, incidents and complaints for conformity with codes and rules.
• Witnesses safety tests on high‑speed elevators and conducts spot-checks and audits.
• Studies drawings to obtain inspection details and reviews occupancy changes affecting safety features.
• Issues violations, summonses and stop work orders and verifies licenses on site.
• Maintains records and reports; testifies as needed in ECB, depositions or court.
• May supervise, train subordinates, review applications relevant to the field and assist supervisor.
