  • Assist other Renal Pathology areas as needed and as training permits.
  • Meets QC and proficiency standards; participates in CQI activities; collects data for Medical Director and QA committee.
  • Performs EM specimen prep on research specimens and photography when competency is documented by EM Specialist 4/5.
  • Files and organizes blocks, grids, and electronic images.
  • Other duties as required.

Job Title

Electron Microscopy Specialist 2 - Pathology - Days

Position Summary

The Electron Microscopy (EM) Laboratory is the branch of biology which studies the ultrastructure of cells. It is a laboratory within the Division of Renal Pathology (though they do work with other tissues), within the Department of Pathology. EM staff prepare, view, and photograph various portions of electron microscopy specimens from kidney biopsies, as well as other human tissue and cells, for diagnostic purposes, supporting the Department of Pathology in diagnostic functions pertaining to patient care.

The Electron Microscopy Specialists process minute tissue specimens, embed them in epoxy resin embedding media, polymerize the embedded tissue, use the ultramicrotome to cut both thick (1 µm) and thin (80 nm) sections, and stain sections, and will learn to review and photograph specimens all under supervision from the Electron Microscopy Specialist 4 or 5.

Responsibilities
  • Performs some phases of diagnostic electron microscopy, such as accessioning, triaging specimens, specimen processing, embedding, ultramicrotomy, under supervision of senior EM Specialists, on clinical specimens.
  • Receives, labels, and stocks incoming supplies and reagents; monitors inventory and reports when supplies should be ordered; performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and utensils.
  • Observes and practices examination and photography of EM specimens under supervision until competency is demonstrated, then may begin to examine and photograph EM cases.
  • Will assist other areas in Renal Pathology, as required, and as training permits.
  • Meets quality control and proficiency testing standards as required by regulatory agencies; participates in various Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities; a collects data for the Medical Director and technical QA committee as directed.
  • Performs electron microscopy specimen preparation on research specimens and examination and photography on these specimens when competency has been demonstrated and documented by the EM Specialist 4 or 5.
  • Files and organizes blocks, grids, and electronic images.
  • Other duties as required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in basic biological science, with microscopy courses or some EM experience preferred; Microscopy Society of America (MSA) certification preferred.
