Job summary

GM Performance Power Units in Concord, NC is seeking an Electromagnetic Simulation Engineer to advance EM modeling of high‑speed motors and power electronics for Formula 1 power units. You will develop 2D/3D FEA models using JMAG, Ansys Maxwell, Motor-CAD, or Flux to optimize performance, losses, and thermal loads.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering; Master’s preferred.
  • 3–7 years of electromagnetic simulation experience in motors or machines.
  • Proficiency with EM FEA tools (JMAG, Ansys Maxwell, Motor-CAD, Flux).
  • Strong understanding of PMSM/IPMSM theory, field-weakening, loss mechanisms.
  • Experience with performance mapping, efficiency optimization, and thermal–electromagnetic coupling.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or similar for post-processing and automation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and communicate technical results.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute 2D/3D EM FEA models for high power, high speed motors.
  • Perform performance mapping, torque-speed curves, loss calculations.
  • Analyze designs for high-speed operation, thermal management, manufacturability.
  • Support transient and harmonic analyses for inverter switching effects.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, controls, and manufacturing teams.
  • Validate simulation results against test data; support prototype development.
  • Document methods, results, and recommendations in technical reports.
