Key Responsibilities
- Receives instruction covering the schedule and emergency repair, installation and inspection of work to be done.
- Inspects plant equipment for defects such as misalignment, wear, or insufficient lubrication and determines the best way of making repairs to minimise production interruption.
- Plans details of working procedures to affect the most logical approach to the job; advises when immediate shutdown of equipment is necessary to minimise damage.
- Dismantles, cleans, repairs, replaces, installs, maintains, assembles, lubricates and adjusts equipment for proper operation.
- Operates simple machine tools.
- Erects scaffolds, performs rigging as necessary, and establishes safety barriers as required.
- Interprets drawings and sketches, plans detail of work procedures, tools and material requirements, and selects materials suitable for the job.
- Operates mechanical lifting devices in the performance of duties.
- Lays out work, prepares surface for welding, sets up and assembles, constructs fixtures as required, and performs brazing and welding.
- Cleans, grinds and flame‑anneals parts and welded joints as required; uses cutting equipment to dismantle assemblies and shape material to size and shape.
- Sets up and operates pipe‑bending, threading and cut‑off equipment and uses hand tools to fabricate and install pipe for transport of gases and liquids.
- Sets up and operates sheet‑metal fabricating equipment.
- Fabricates and installs ductwork for heating and ventilating.
- Makes calculations essential in estimating material requirements.
- Sets up and operates wood‑working tools as required; performs a variety of rough or finished carpentry work, installs prefabricated wood and metal parts, performs glazing as required, and dismantles various types of roofing and siding.
- Operates and maintains mechanical equipment such as air compressors, emergency generators, ventilating equipment, pumps and HVAC units.
- Prepares surface for painting and applies paints and coatings as required.
- Utilises company vehicle for maintenance functions.
- Receives wiring diagrams, specifications and instructions covering scheduled and emergency repair, installation and inspection of work.
- Analyzes drawings and wiring diagrams to locate and install circuits and equipment, determines material or replacement needs, and selects a logical approach to troubleshooting and repair problems.
- Considers all safety precautions and proper isolation of circuits to minimise operational interference.
- Plans details of working procedures to achieve the most logical outcome; consistently considers safety precautions and isolation of circuits.
- Plans and performs work requiring a thorough knowledge of electrical principles, wiring specifications, codes, material properties, and equipment operation and application.
- Locates sources of trouble for any type of electrical equipment by tracing and testing circuits and inspecting for faulty operation.
- Dismantles, inspects, repairs, adjusts or replaces faulty parts and wiring on motors, generators, power distribution and control panels, circuit breakers, rectifiers, electronic devices, etc.; reassembles, tests and adjusts equipment for safe, proper operation; performs work on hot lines as required; replaces coils, resistors, rheostats, relays, etc.; adjusts contactors, relays, bus rigging; reconnects terminal leads, panel boards, and distribution feeders; alters DC motor characteristics by shunting series coils; installs conduit, fittings, switches, controls and fixtures, and wires and connects all types of electrical equipment for new installations or replacements; makes all required splices and connector joints.
- Adjusts all new equipment for proper operating characteristics.
- Applies knowledge of programmable controllers and PLC logic relays.
- For employees assigned to work with hazardous wastes, ensures they are trained and qualified in proper hazardous‑waste management practices.
- Exercises all safety precautions.
- Works in exposure areas.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
