Job summary

Ports America, Inc. in Baltimore, MD seeks an Electro-Mechanical Crane Manager to lead the Crane Maintenance Department, supervising electro-mechanical cranes and related equipment. You will ensure safety, reliability, and preventive maintenance alignment while supporting site operations and customer service.

Your responsibilities include supervising on-site cranes, coordinating with staff, subcontractors, and procurement, and driving improvements to equipment uptime and maintenance planning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering; equivalent experience may be substituted.
  • Experience with electrical, hydraulic, and/or mechanical equipment; PLC logic experience.
  • Technical knowledge of maintenance and repair of quay cranes, rubber-tired gantry cranes, spreaders, and related equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure electro-mechanical maintenance and repair of cranes is performed in a timely and cost-effective manner, prioritizing quality and equipment longevity.
  • Supervise maintenance and repair of all site cranes, their supporting equipment, and components (electrical, electronic, and mechanical).
  • Maintain equipment in safe and reliable working condition per the preventive maintenance program; identify and rectify repetitive problems.
  • Monitor warranties and file claims as appropriate.
  • Ensure breakdowns are corrected promptly and coordinate follow-up work.
  • Prevent repairs from adversely impacting customer services; liaise with planning for maintenance scheduling and provide feedback for continual improvement.
  • Recommend and develop equipment improvements and modifications.
  • Order spare parts for the department and assist Procurement in locating and pricing parts.
  • Supervise on-site subcontractors and any major projects or repairs.
  • Prepare estimates for damages/repairs and submit reports.
  • Provide supervision and direction for crane maintenance staff; offer guidance, feedback, and daily work scheduling.
  • Ensure safety procedures are followed and appropriate safety gear is used.
  • Counsel subordinates, including discipline or termination recommendations as needed.
  • Ensure staff knowledge is updated; follow labor contract requirements with respect to union personnel.
  • Manage department budget within guidelines and annual goals; provide complete and accurate reports to management.
  • Assist Engineering Director with special projects and other duties as assigned.

Overview

Ports America is seeking an Electro-Mechanical Crane Manager to support the Crane Maintenance Department in the maritime sector. Location: Baltimore, MD (Seagirt area). This role may require coordination with on-site staff, subcontractors, and procurement to maintain equipment availability and uptime.

  • Technical knowledge of maintenance and repair of quay cranes, rubber-tired gantry cranes, spreaders, and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering principles; ability to interpret engineering drawings, layouts, and specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of PLC and drive control systems for container cranes; familiarity with terminal operations and crane-vessel coordination.
  • Supervisory and leadership abilities with the capacity to influence and lead a department of trades or union workers.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, National Electrical Code, welding and electrical standards, and related regulations at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Excellent planning, organizational skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities, especially for highly complex technical issues.
  • Proficiency with computerized maintenance management software; strong time management in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to work in physically demanding conditions and hazardous environments as described in the role.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical knowledge of maintenance and repair of quay cranes, rubber-tired gantry cranes, spreaders, and related equipment.
  • Broad understanding of terminal operations and crane-vessel coordination; ability to interpret and apply engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Experience leading a department of trades and/or union workers; effective communication and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, NEC, welding and electrical standards; compliance with regulations at all levels.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills with high attention to detail and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to use computerized maintenance systems specific to crane maintenance and repair.
  • Exceptional time management in a fast-paced environment.
