Job summary

Job Description:

Inspects electrical systems and their components; determines malfunctions and conditions; identifies and makes repairs; recommends and completes preventive maintenance. Installs and repairs electrical systems and components, including (but not limited to) wires, lighting, controllers, panels, switches, outlets, generators, circuits, motors, signs, and compressors. Installs conduit and other wiring raceways. Uses equipment, including (but not limited to) volt/amps/ohmmeters and other electrical test equipment with inspections, repairs, and installations. Operates UF vehicle(s). Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars (as assigned) for conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions. Encourages and promotes a team philosophy and safe work environment; communicates and maintains a professional attitude and rapport with supervisors, co-workers, departmental staff members, resident students, university staff members, and vendors. Analyzes blue prints, schematics, and drawings of electrical systems for repairing or determining the efficient installation of new or upgraded systems. Maintains tools, vehicles, and equipment; keeps parts and supplies in order. Uses computer software for maintenance work orders, timecards, and other items (as directed).

Valid Florida driver license is required.

Criminal background check and physical evaluation required.

Normal Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday, 08:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m.
  • May be required to be available for on-call emergency maintenance via telephone
  • Overtime may be required during peak periods
Expected Salary

$16.00 to $17.00 Hourly based on experience.

Required Qualifications

Preferred

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship program in a recognized trade and appropriate experience to total six years; or a high school diploma and six years of appropriate experience
  • Successful completion of a journeyman level proctored competency exam

KNOWLEDGE

  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code and National Electrical Code and National Fire Protection Associations Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA 70E)
  • Knowledge in the operation of hand tools, drills, grinders, volt/amp/ohmmeters, and other electrical test equipment
  • Knowledge of repairing small motors and component parts
  • Knowledge in electrical systems, equipment, appliances, and electrical circuits

SKILLS

  • Skills in bending and installing conduit and pulling wire
  • Computer skills

ABILITIES

  • Ability to read blueprints and schematic drawings
  • Ability to use high reach equipment, climb ladders and stairs, work overhead, push and pull, and bend and kneel
  • Ability to operate volt amps, ohm meters, other electrical test equipment, drills, grinders, and other hand tools
  • Ability to receive and execute instructions from immediate supervisor and/or lead worker
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with electrician team
  • Ability to drive a state vehicle
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and written to immediate supervisor and/or lead worker
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, vendors, departmental staff, and university staff

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to lift heavy objects; move items weighing 50 pounds or more
  • Ability to climb (including stairs and ladders daily)
  • Ability to reach above shoulders frequently
  • Ability to kneel
  • Ability to bend repeatedly
  • Ability to pull and push repetitively
  • Ability to stand for up to seven hours daily
  • Ability to work in direct sunlight and heat for extended period
  • Ability to work in confined space
  • Ability to work in dusty conditions
  • Ability to perform other types of physical exertion necessary for task completion
