Position Goal

Performs journeyman level installation, service and repair to various systems including, but not limited to, electrical distribution, emergency lighting, telephone, street/parking lot lighting, HVAC, security, fire alarms and intercoms.

Position Rate

$27.69 per hour

Essential Functions
  • Installs, alters, maintains and repairs electrical wiring and equipment, both high and low voltage.
  • Inspects electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to insure compliance with codes.
  • Diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
  • Installs ground leads and connects power cables to equipment, such as motors.
  • Installs conduit and pull wires/cables.
  • Provides preliminary sketches and cost estimates for materials and services.
  • Tests electrical systems and continuity of circuits in wiring, equipment and fixtures using testing devices.
  • Plans layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures based on job specifications and codes.
  • Purchases parts and equipment, recommends annual supply requirements.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and schematic wiring diagrams.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee. This job description does not constitute an exhaustive list of responsibilities and management may revise it at any time.

Education and/or Experience

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) plus satisfactory completion of an approved 4‑year electrical apprenticeship. (Demonstrated aptitude or competence for performing work outlined under essential functions.)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

City of Reading Journeyman’s License. Valid Pennsylvania Operator’s License.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, wiring diagrams and technical and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate scope of work and plans of actions to management, building administrators, custodians, and maintenance personnel.
  • Ability to complete work order forms, time sheets, and other departmental forms.
  • Ability to prepare sketches, drawings and plans.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and other construction related documents.
  • Ability to plan, measure and layout jobs.
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts utilizing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Ability to compute areas, circumference, length, width, depth and volume.
  • Ability to calculate percentages, discounts and total costs.
Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to collect/compile information to determine appropriate course of action.
  • Ability to adapt to unforeseen field conditions.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram or schedule form.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, balance; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, perform work overhead and work from ladders. Work involves exposure to unpleasant elements, extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, chemicals, etc. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions, and may include the use of protective gear. The employee must frequently move and/or lift up to 50 pounds such as materials and equipment. Specific vision capabilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to hear conversations in noisy environments. The employee must be able to drive all district vehicles. The employee is responsible to provide for the safety and well being of those within the immediate vicinity of where the essential functions of the job are being performed.

Work Environment

The work is performed inside and/or outside and includes being exposed to extreme cold, extreme heat, high humidity, loud noise, vibration, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards and chemical hazards.
