This on-site role provides safety oversight for construction and field operations, collaborating with project teams to ensure compliance with NFPA 70E, OSHA, and IEEE standards.

Qualifications

• DOE security clearance required.
• Advanced knowledge of NFPA 70E and related safety standards.
• Experience with electrical systems (low voltage AC/DC).
• Strong written and verbal communication; able to brief diverse audiences.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety documentation.
• Radiological Worker II training or ability to pass training.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary contact on electrical safety for LANL projects.
• Advise LANL employees and managers on electrical safety concerns.
• Investigate incidents and determine root causes; implement corrective actions.
• Inspect workplaces to identify electrical hazards across environments.
• Lead reviews of IWDs and LOTO procedures.
• Develop electrical safety policies, procedures, and design standards.
• Support engineers and scientists with complex electrical safety solutions.
• Evaluate controlled items for compliance with electrical safety requirements.
• Calculate electrical severity scores for incidents.
• Contribute to codes, standards, and specifications for electrical safety.

Job Summary

SMSI is seeking an experienced Electrical Safety Officer to support the Electrical Safety Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This role provides electrical safety expertise and oversight for construction and field operations, working closely with project managers, craft personnel, work planners, and other professionals. Responsibilities include supporting electrical safe work practices, conducting safety assessments and incident investigations, and ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards. The ideal candidate will have strong technical knowledge, communication, leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. This role will be 100% onsite in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary contact on electrical safety and administer the LANL Electrical Safety Program.
• Act as a resource for LANL employees and managers regarding electrical safety concerns.
• Conduct incident investigations and determine root causes, developing corrective actions as necessary.
• Perform workplace condition inspections to identify electrical hazards in various environments.
• Lead reviews of Integrated Work Documents (IWD) and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
• Contribute to the development of codes, standards, and specifications for electrical equipment safety.
• Provide advanced support to engineers/scientists in solving complex technical problems.
• Participate in the evaluation of controlled items and services for compliance with electrical safety requirements.
• Perform calculations to determine electrical severity scores for incidents.
• Develop written electrical safety policies, procedures, and design standards.

Required Skills/Abilities

• Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Q level security clearance.
• Advanced knowledge of electrical safety standards including NFPA, IEEE, and OSHA, particularly NFPA 70E.
• Experience with electrical engineering/technology in various applications such as low voltage AC and DC systems.
• Significant experience with personal computer systems and software, including Microsoft Office.
• Demonstrated expert communication and organizational skills for presenting complex technical information.
• Ability to pass Radiological Worker II training.

Desired Skills

• Previous experience working at LANL and/or nuclear facilities is preferred but not required.
• An active or recently inactive DOE Clearance.
• Demonstrated exceptional communication and organizational skills by effectively presenting complex technical information to diverse audiences.
• The candidate must be US Citizen.
• The candidate must have an active DOE Q clearance.
• The candidate must have an active Real ID driver's license for badging and onboarding.

Education

• Bachelor's degree and 7 years of relevant field experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
