Job description

This is technical inspection work performed on residential and multi-family dwelling units for the Building Division at an entry level.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Although charged with enforcing compliance with the Douglas County adopted Codes and regulations, the incumbent must do so in accordance with the County’s policy that emphasizes obtaining compliance over punitive enforcement, using the latter as a last resort. Therefore, the incumbent must use all his/her knowledge, tact, resources and ingenuity to coach, educate and assist customers to achieve compliance with applicable County codes, resolutions, policies, and statutory regulations. Further, the incumbent:

  • Inspects primarily single and multi-family residential buildings for compliance with electrical codes during all phases of construction, alteration, and repair.
  • Inspects multi-family dwellings for compliance with Colorado Title IX and Building Code accessibility requirements and design specifications.
  • Answers questions from homeowners and contractors related to electrical codes.
  • Investigates complaints and provides a high level of customer service by defining problems and working towards solutions.
  • Protects businesses and homeowners from improper workmanship.
  • Reads maps and or GPS to organizes inspection route to achieve 100% completion of requested inspections on a daily basis. Often schedules inspection times with homeowners to accommodate their schedules.
  • Keeps current and informed of new construction methods, materials, safety procedures, and national, state, and local codes, interpretations, and regulations. Advises various county maintenance departments in design and construction methods.
  • Assists in developing local amendments and regulations.
  • Issues correction notices or Stop Work orders to ensure compliance and adopted codes.
  • Responsible for basic knowledge of the installation requirements, specifications and manufactures standards for equipment, devices and systems that are not defined within the NEC.
  • Must be familiar with listings requirements of UL, CSA ETL and other recognized testing laboratories and be able to use and understand their directories.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A validState of Colorado, Residential Wireman’s or Journeyman Electrician’s License required.
  • At least two (2) years of related electrical construction experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience in the following areas:
  • Customer service experience, including public contact and complaint resolution
  • Construction estimation or design
  • Installation, maintenance and/or repair of building systems
  • Regulatory interpretation or compliance

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License upon hire, with complying insurance. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment.
  • Must maintain a current Residential Wireman’s or Journeyman Electrician’s License.
  • Ability to obtain ICC/ IAEI certification within one year of hire.
  • Other ICC/ IAEI or recognized certifications, are highly desirable.
