Job summary

City of Cambridge is seeking a Wiring Inspector in the Inspectional Services Department to supervise and perform electrical inspections under the National Electrical Code and state laws.

The role involves inspecting wiring in buildings, handling complaints, gathering evidence for prosecutions, and coordinating with the Commissioner of Inspectional Services for enforcement and reports.

Qualifications

• At least three years within the last five years of full time, paid experience in electrical work as a licensed journeyman or master electrician.
• "A" or "B" Massachusetts Master or Journeyman Electrician’s license, issued by the State Board of Examiners of Electricians.
• Working knowledge in personal computer operation and experience in Windows programs such as Outlook, Excel, and Word.

Responsibilities

• Inspect electrical wiring and fixture installations for compliance with the safety requirements of the Massachusetts Electrical Code.
• Inspect electrical wiring installations for transmission of electrical current for light, heat and power in any building to ascertain conformance with safety laws and regulations and give final approval before turning on the current.
• Investigate complaints from landlords, tenants, and Fire Prevention Bureau and others and issue orders for the correction of defects or violations.
• Gather evidence for prosecution of violators and give testimony in court cases, consult with superiors on difficult or unusual cases; prepare related reports.
• Other duties as may be assigned.
