Job description

Electrical Engineer – Medium Voltage / Power Systems

Location - Houston, TX

Duration: Contract till 09/20/2027 (High Possibility of Extension)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to support major Gas Transmission projects for client. This role will lead the electrical design portion of assigned projects while coordinating closely with third-party engineering and design firms.

The ideal candidate will have 2–5 years of hands‑on electrical engineering and detailed design experience, preferably gained within an engineering consulting, EPC, or design firm. Strong experience with medium‑voltage power systems and power system studies is highly valued.

This is primarily an office‑based engineering and design coordination role, rather than a field engineering position. The successful candidate will use their hands‑on design background to review engineering deliverables, monitor design progression, coordinate external engineering firms, and ensure projects continue moving forward.

Oil & Gas or Gas Transmission experience is beneficial, but candidates with transferable experience in industrial, pipeline, liquids, power, chemical, manufacturing, or other process facilities are encouraged to apply.

The Electrical Engineer will work closely with the Mechanical Lead and other engineering disciplines on assigned projects.

New team members will initially be paired with an experienced engineer for shadowing, training, and knowledge transfer before taking greater ownership of assigned projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the electrical design portion of assigned projects.

  • Coordinate and oversee detailed engineering work performed by third-party engineering and design firms.

  • Monitor engineering progress and ensure design activities remain on schedule and aligned with project requirements.

  • Review electrical engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and other design deliverables.

  • Coordinate with Mechanical Engineering and other disciplines to ensure integrated project execution.

  • Support electrical power system studies and analysis.

  • Identify design issues, gaps, and risks and independently follow up on actions needed to keep engineering work progressing.

  • Communicate with external engineering firms to clarify requirements, resolve technical issues, and maintain design quality.

  • Provide limited electrical engineering support during construction and commissioning.

  • Support approximately one project initially, with responsibilities spanning approximately three project sites.

  • Maintain strong communication with internal project teams, engineering partners, contractors, and other stakeholders.

Approximate Work Breakdown

  • 70% – Engineering coordination and design progression management

  • 10% – Construction support

Electrical / Technical Environment

The team performs medium‑voltage electrical design work up to approximately 18 kV.

Projects may include:

  • Gas compression facilities

  • Motors

  • Electrical power systems

  • Medium‑voltage equipment

  • Electrical protection and controls

Direct gas turbine or motor experience is not required. Candidates with a strong foundation in electrical engineering, detailed design, and power systems are encouraged to apply.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • Approximately 2–5 years of relevant electrical engineering experience.

  • Hands‑on experience with detailed electrical engineering and design.

  • Understanding of the engineering design lifecycle from development through detailed design and completion.

  • Ability to review and evaluate electrical engineering designs and deliverables.

  • Strong understanding of electrical power systems and equipment.

  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of assignments, and follow issues through resolution.

  • Strong communication and coordination skills.

  • Experience working with engineering firms, contractors, vendors, or multiple project stakeholders.

  • Ability to travel approximately 20–25% as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or similar power system study software.

  • Experience performing or supporting power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, arc flash, or protective device coordination.

  • Experience with medium‑voltage electrical design.

  • Previous experience working for an engineering consulting firm, EPC company, or engineering/design house.

  • Experience developing or reviewing detailed engineering packages.

  • Experience with electrical one‑line diagrams, equipment specifications, cable schedules, electrical calculations, and design drawings.

  • Previous experience in Oil & Gas, Gas Transmission, Gas Compression, Pipeline, or Midstream environments.

  • Experience in liquids/pipeline, refinery, petrochemical, chemical, industrial, power generation, or other process facilities is considered transferable.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate has progressed from hands‑on electrical design into a role requiring design review and engineering coordination.

You should be comfortable understanding what goes into a detailed electrical engineering package and using that knowledge to challenge, review, and coordinate the work of third‑party engineering firms.

Candidates from engineering consulting, EPC, industrial, power, pipeline, liquids, chemical, refinery, or similar environments are encouraged to apply. Natural gas experience is preferred but not required if the candidate has a strong electrical design and power systems foundation.

Why Join the Team?

This is an opportunity to apply hands‑on electrical engineering expertise to complex infrastructure projects while developing deeper experience in project engineering, design coordination, medium‑voltage power systems, and cross‑disciplinary project execution.

The role provides structured onboarding and the opportunity to progressively take ownership of increasingly complex engineering assignments.
