Job summary

University of Illinois seeks an Electrical Engineer for Engineering Services (Design Review) within Facilities and Services in Urbana-Champaign. Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.
• In-depth (5+ years) progressively responsible administrative experience in engineering design of electrical systems, lighting, fire alarm, and related fire safety systems.
• Demonstrated knowledge of building systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and/or building automation and/or control systems.

Responsibilities

• Provide troubleshooting expertise for electrical, lighting, and fire alarm systems; identify problems and propose corrective work with scope and probable costs.
• Prepare detailed design documents (drawings and specifications) for remodeling, renovation, repair, or new work.
• Provide detailed engineering analysis of electrical and lighting systems.
• Review projects designed by PSCs and in-house designers; write review comments for code/standards non-compliance.
• Attend meetings and participate in discussions related to review comments.
• Provide technical review and opinions on variance requests for projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

ProjectDesign & review
1. Provide troubleshootingexpertise for existing electrical, lighting, and fire alarm systems that arenot functioning properly to identify problems, determine appropriateresolution, and provide recommended corrective work in project program analysisformat with clear definition of scope and probable costs.
2. Provide detailed designdocuments (drawings and specifications) for construction projects forremodeling, renovation, repair, replacement, or new work. This includes allnecessary engineering analysis, design and layout of electrical, lighting, andfire alarm systems.
3. Provide detailedengineering analysis of electrical and lighting systems.
4. Provide detailed review ofprojects designed by outside professional services consultants (PSCs) andin-house designers. Prepare writtenreview comments for items not compliant with code or University FacilitiesStandards and for items not compatible, coordinated or acceptable for theproposed use.
5. Participate in formal orinformal discussions related to review comments.
6. Provide technical review& opinion on variance approval request forms submitted on projects.
7. Provide assessments ofexisting buildings and grounds for condition, function, and compatibility withthe Campus Master Plan.
8. Provide assessment ofexisting electrical, lighting, and fire alarm systems of campus buildings foroperations, capacity, functionality, compatibility with associated systems anduse of spaces served.
9. Provide assessment of newtechnologies, equipment, and systems for electrical, lighting, and fire alarmbuilding elements and associated equipment in order to evaluate applicabilityand value to campus projects.
10. Prepare and present reports, programs ordrawings to F&S management or staff as assigned.
11. Utilize software andinformation resources available to the F&S Division. This includesMicrosoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.), AutoCAD, AiM, themy.fs.illinois.edu Portal, SharePoint, and internet offerings.

Construction& Warranty Support
1. Provide review ofelectrical, lighting, and fire alarm construction submittals and testingverification as requested.
2. Attend constructionprogress meetings as needed or by request.
3. Provide technical supportand on-site inspections as requested for the Commissioning & InspectionGroup.
4. Assist Lead Inspector andoccupant with technical issues during the warranty or post construction phase.

ProjectPlanning & Assistance
1. Assist with projectplanning and program analysis phase for new construction and renovationprojects to assist in the development of detailed technical scopes, andcomments on the schedules and budgets.

Supportto Other Units
1. Provide technical supportto F&S Crafts and Trades for equipment selection, troubleshooting ofbuilding elements and system problems, development of preventive maintenanceneeds and answer technical questions.
2. Provide electrical,lighting, and fire alarm design expertise in support of CapitalPrograms/Deferred Maintenance, Engineering Services, Construction Services,Utilities and Engineering Services, Building Maintenance & Grounds, andother F&S Departments as well as campus units.
3. Provide electrical,lighting, and fire alarm engineering support to Design Services, includingdesign (drawings and/or specifications) for selected projects. Assist and coordinate with other staff ondesign and review issues.

Campus CommitteeAssignments
1. Participate in the QBSprocess for selection of Professional Service Consultants as assigned.
2. Participate in variousDeferred Maintenance committees for assessment and prioritization of buildings.
3. Participate in hiringselection committees.

Other Duties
1. Establish and maintaineffective working relationships with other employees, faculty, staff,administration, professional consultants, and contractors.
2. Provide support in thecollaboration, development, and maintenance of the University FacilitiesStandards.
3. Perform other duties andresponsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution.

Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.

In-depth (five (5) years minimum) progressively responsible administrative experience in engineering design of electrical systems, lighting, fire alarm, and related fire safety systems.

Demonstrated knowledge & experience of building systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and/or building automation and/or control systems.

Preferred Qualifications

CEM, CEFP, LEED or additional certification in engineering, energy or facility management.

Seven (7) or more years of extensive design experience with medium and low voltage distribution systems, emergency & stand-by power, lighting, and fire alarm systems with increasing responsibility of project development and management.

Experience using lighting selection software and performing lighting calculations.

Experience in Siemens and Schneider Electric I/A Building Automation Control Systems.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of applicable building codes, standards, and regulations, including the International Building Code, International Mechanical Code, International Electrical Code, International Energy Conservation Code, National Fire Protection Associate Code, and other applicable codes and standards.
• Knowledge of applicable higher education standards, including University Facilities Standards.
• Thorough knowledge of electrical building systems, particularly in institutional facilities.
• Thorough knowledge of systems modeling and optimum system selection.
• Knowledge of laboratory electrical design.
• Developed trouble shooting skills for performance of building systems.
• General knowledge of building systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire suppression, and building automation and control systems.
• Thorough knowledge of CEM, CEFP, LEED, or additional certification programs in engineering, energy, or facility management.
• Moderate working skills with AutoCAD.
• Solid knowledge and Microsoft Office and Adobe products.
• Solid written and verbal communication skills.
• Solid technical writing ability.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 9/21/2026. The salary range for this position is $100,000-$117,500. We strive to provide a competitive salary, consider factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate qualifications, and budget constraints. Final salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.This position is not eligible for any type of sponsorship for work authorization.
