Capital Planning and Facilities(CPF) works to ensure that Indiana University (IU) campuses arebeautiful, functional, and sustainable supporting excellence inteaching, learning, research, and community engagement across theentire university. A unit within CPF, Facility Operations maintains our physical campus to supportresearch, teaching, and learning at Indiana University Bloomington.As a unit of Capital Planning and Facilities, Facility Operationsprovides wide-ranging services all with the goal of creating abeautiful, well-functioning campus.
Job Summary
Over the next 12 to 24 months, Capital Planning and Facilitiesfaces an extraordinary volume of critical infrastructure workspecifically required for the Chancellor's Office. This positionwill directly execute and accelerate high-priority work orders,including card access point installations, panic button testing andintegration, and security camera deployments. Given the risingscale and technical complexity of capital projects across IndianaUniversity, this position creates a structured internal careerpipeline, serving as a talent incubator for future advancement intothe Electrical Specialist roles.
Department Specific Responsibilities
- Assists lead technicians with installing, configuring, andmaintaining low-voltage electrical systems, security networks, andlife-safety systems. This specific designation means a person inthis role is not just pulling cables; they are buildingfoundational expertise in specialized electrical control circuits,relay logic, and automation protocols.
- Runs, fishes, and secures low-voltage signaling andcommunication cables through conduit networks, structured plenums,and framing.
- Strips, dresses, and terminates copper wiring into securitycontrol panels, power supplies, relay modules, and peripheraldevices.
- Mounts electronic locks, biometric scanners, closed-circuittelevision (CCTV) cameras, motion sensors, and smart automationmodules using precise hand and power tools.
- Assists senior specialists in utilizing multimeters and tonegenerators to map paths, check continuity, and detect groundfaults.
- Measures, cuts, bends, and installs thin-wall electricalmetallic tubing (EMT) or PVC paths for exposed circuitry.
- Inputs basic device zones, configures network IP addresses, andverifies communication links using software interfaces under directguidance.
- Executes rigorous job-site safety measures, including propertool staging, ladder stability protocols, and strict adherence toNational Electrical Code (NEC) articles.
- Other duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities
- Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installselectrical conduit (both EMT and rigid, and wiremold). Measures,cuts, and installs wires into conduit and makes proper connectionsat junction boxes and equipment.
- Splices wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads andtwisting wires together, and applies tape or terminal caps.
- Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment.Installs or replaces control and distribution apparatus such asswitches and circuit-breaker panels.
- Connects power cables to equipment, such as electric range ormotor, and installs grounding leads.
- Performs electrical repairs to include, but not limited to,outlets, switches, and ballasts; removes and replaces lightfixtures; and repairs appliances and faulty equipment andsystems.
- Investigates circuits to determine source, voltage, load, zone,etc. Tests continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibilityand safety of components with testing instruments such asmulti-meter, volt-ohm meter, amp-probe, etc. Observes functioningof installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need foradjustments, relocation, or replacement.
- Cleans work areas, tools, machines, and other equipment.
- Performs other semi-skilled electrical as assigned. Drivesvehicle as needed.
Qualifications
Education
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
Work Experience
Required
- 3 years Craft maintenance work which includes experience inconstruction, appliance repair, and electrical control installationand repair.
Preferred
- Enrollment in an electrical technology or electronic systemsengineering program is highly preferred.
Licenses And Certificates
Required
- Possesses a valid driver's license and ability to be insured byIndiana University upon date of hire.

- Ability to make and work from measurements and to makemathematical computations required to complete assigned tasks.
Preferred
- Meticulous attention to detail to ensure complex low-voltagewiring is neat, safe, and perfectly labeled.
- Capacity to capture, process, and execute detailed technicalinstructions from senior engineering personnel withoutdeviation.
- Natural inclination toward logical troubleshooting anddiagnostic problem-solving.
Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary positionas well as the ability to move about the workplace for longdurations. It requires effective communication, the ability tooperate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires theability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one'sself in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/orgases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and movein tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person inthis role must be able to perform the essential functions with orwithout an accommodation.
