POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking an experienced and licensed Electrical Engineer to help expand the firm’s in-house engineering capabilities. This role will work closely with architectural, mechanical, structural, and civil teams, as well as external consultants and contractors, to deliver comprehensive electrical engineering solutions.
The successful candidate will be a licensed Professional Electrical Engineer (PE) with strong experience designing and producing stamped electrical construction documents for healthcare, institutional, and commercial projects.
The Electrical Engineer will serve as the firm’s internal electrical subject-matter expert, supporting projects from conceptual design and documentation through construction administration. Responsibilities will include power distribution, lighting, emergency power, grounding, fire alarm, low-voltage, AV/telecommunications, access control, and security systems coordination.
Healthcare and institutional project experience is highly preferred. The ability to work independently as the primary in-house electrical engineer, while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary environment, is essential.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design and prepare stamped electrical construction documents throughout all project phases, including power distribution, lighting, emergency/standby power, and grounding systems.
- Perform electrical load calculations and size/specify service entrance equipment, switchgear, panelboards, transformers, and distribution systems based on project requirements and occupancy.
- Design interior and exterior lighting systems, including fixture selection, photometric analysis, lighting controls, daylighting integration, and applicable energy-code compliance.
- Design emergency and standby power systems, including generator sizing, automatic transfer switches, and essential electrical systems for healthcare and institutional facilities.
- Coordinate fire alarm systems with licensed fire alarm contractors and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), including preparation of riser diagrams and device layouts where applicable.
- Coordinate low-voltage systems, including structured cabling, AV/telecommunications, access control, security, and CCTV systems with specialty contractors.
- Prepare system riser diagrams and define required electrical infrastructure for low-voltage systems.
- Coordinate electrical design within the project BIM environment, participate in multidisciplinary coordination meetings, and resolve design conflicts with architectural, mechanical, structural, and civil disciplines.
- Coordinate with Mechanical Engineering teams on equipment power requirements, controls wiring, and Building Automation System (BAS) integration.
- Develop electrical specifications in applicable MasterFormat divisions and review shop drawings, submittals, and related construction documentation.
- Conduct construction site visits, observe electrical installations, respond to RFIs, and verify compliance with approved construction documents.
- Support business development activities by contributing to proposals, presentations, and client meetings where in-house electrical engineering capabilities add value.
- Help establish electrical design standards, typical details, templates, and specification libraries as the firm’s engineering practice continues to grow.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent discipline required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering required.
- Michigan PE registration or eligibility for registration through reciprocity required at the time of hire.
- Minimum 7 years of electrical engineering experience, with demonstrated expertise in power distribution and lighting design for commercial, institutional, or healthcare facilities.
- Experience working within an AEC firm or multidisciplinary design environment preferred.
- Experience designing emergency and standby power systems required; familiarity with NFPA 110 and NFPA 99 strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of fire alarm, low-voltage, AV/telecommunications, access control, and security system coordination within an A/E project environment.
- Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD required.
- Strong knowledge of applicable building codes, NEC requirements, energy codes, and engineering standards.
- Healthcare or institutional project experience preferred.
- Familiarity with essential electrical systems, isolated power systems, and nurse-call coordination is a strong plus.
- Ability to work independently as the primary in-house electrical engineer while effectively collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work professionally with clients, contractors, consultants, and AHJs.
CORE COMPETENCIES
- Strong electrical engineering analysis and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to develop practical, efficient, and code-compliant electrical solutions for complex facilities.
- Excellent communication and multidisciplinary coordination skills.
- Strong technical accuracy and attention to detail.
- Effective organizational and project management abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines independently.
- Professional and client-focused approach to communication.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced project environment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is based in a professional office and project environment and requires regular collaboration with architects, engineers, contractors, consultants, and clients.
The role combines office-based engineering and BIM/design work with field coordination and construction observation activities. Periodic site visits may be required depending on project requirements and project phase.
The successful candidate should be comfortable taking ownership of electrical engineering responsibilities while working collaboratively across multiple disciplines and project stages.
