Qualifications

  • Proficiency in MS Office; desirable: Altium, OrCAD, Eagle, KiCad, SPICE, LTspice, PSpice, MATLAB, Simulink, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, C/C++, microcontroller IDEs, JTAG debuggers, and/or 3D printing.

Responsibilities

  • Document scenes systematically through photography, videography, notes, sketches, and diagrams.
  • Install and configure data acquisition systems; support lab and field equipment setup.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain lab and field testing equipment.
  • Conduct scene documentation including measurements, photography, 3D laser scanning, and drone photogrammetry.
  • Monitor bus messages on vehicles during testing; set up data acquisition systems (temp, pressure, GNSS, accelerometers).
  • Maintain lab software proficiency (schematic capture, PCB layout tools, CAD tools, MATLAB, Simulink).
  • Inspect and replenish field investigation gear; perform on-site inspections and some overnight travel (~10%).
  • Collaborate on other related projects as needed.

Are you ready to apply your technical skills to high-stakes forensic analysis? Robson Forensic is looking for an individual with a strong technical electrical engineering foundation who is driven by problem-solving. This Laboratory and Field Investigator role offers a rare entry point into forensic engineering, supporting elite testifying experts by testing and capturing the data of complex incidents.

Job Summary:The Laboratory and Field Investigator supports our testifying experts including mechanical, electrical and biomedical engineers and accident reconstructionists by installing, configuring and trouble-shooting vehicle mounted data acquisition equipment and sensors as well as handling test setup and teardown. This individual will also be responsible for performing scene documentation, photography, measurements, and Event Data Recording (EDR “Black Box”) data extraction. This position combines hands-on electrical and mechanical test setup with advanced data acquisition, instrumentation and engineering-level analysis.

This position offers a unique entry point for a new Engineer-In-Training (EIT). The position provides exceptional mentorship, skill development, case variety and a clear pathway toward accumulating the necessary experience satisfying the requirements for the Professional Engineering Exam.

We use a variety of software tools in our lab (listed under Qualifications below). We do not expect candidates to have deep experience with all of them, so we encourage you to apply. We value adaptable learners and are fully committed to training the right person.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist with documenting scenes systematically through photography, videography, written field notes, sketches, and diagrammatic evidence mapping.
  • Provide lab and field test equipment installation support, including assembly of test equipment, hardware fabrication support and setup of data acquisition systems.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain all laboratory and field testing equipment in accordance with calibration schedules and manufacturer requirements.
  • Assist with and independently conduct scene documentation, including field measurements, photography, 3D laser scanning, and drone photogrammetry.
  • Use hardware and software tools to monitor bus messages on vehicles in support of testing.
  • Set up and calibrate data acquisition systems (temperature, pressure, GNSS, accelerometer, etc.)
  • Maintain proficiency with lab software, such as schematic capture and PCB layout tools, circuit simulation, MATLAB, Simulink, CAD tools, and embedded development tools.
  • Maintain, inspect, and replenish all field investigation equipment including cameras, lighting, PPE, evidence collection kits, and scene documentation tools
  • Perform on-site inspections and field data collection; overnight travel will be required (approximately 10% of total time).
  • Other related projects as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution
  • License: Active E.I.T. license preferred, not required.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in MS Office Suite, experience with any of the following is desirable: Altium, OrCAD, Eagle, KiCad, SPICE, LTspice, PSpice, MATLAB, Simulink, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, C/C++, microcontroller IDEs, JTAG debuggers, and/or 3D printing.
  • Additional Software a Plus: Automotive bus communication tools (CANoe, CANalyzer, CANape, Vehicle Spy), Python for data analysis (NumPy, Pandas, Jupyter), sensor data visualization tools (OpenCV, RViz, LIDAR viewers), diagnostic tools (UDS/OBD II), requirements tools (Polarion, DOORS), ADAS simulation tools (CarMaker, dSPACE ASM, CARLA)
  • Office Skills: Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail. Able to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Abilities: Hands-on experience and ability to operate mills, lathes, cutting equipment, welding equipment, and other fabrication equipment and processes is desirable.
  • Work Style: Must be able to work onsite at our lab with occasional field assignments as needed.
  • Other:A clean background screen, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to drive passenger cars and light trucks.
