Job summary

Applied Engineering, Inc. seeks an Electrical Design Engineer - Power Electronics & Thermal Systems in North Dakota. Hybrid schedule with travel to Faribault, MN as needed; candidates must live within 4–5 hours driving distance of Faribault or near Fargo or Bismarck.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
  • 4+ years of electrical engineering experience.
  • Experience with electrical design, modeling, and documentation.
  • Knowledge of power conversion theory and high‑power electrical systems.
  • Experience with power electronics, including IGBT‑based systems and high-frequency switching.
  • Experience with CFD/CFX for electronics cooling and thermal management.
  • Familiarity with sustaining engineering and ECR processes.
  • Ability to identify and execute design improvements for cost, quality and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Drive cost savings, margin improvement, and design enhancements across electrical systems and product lines.
  • Perform electrical design, modeling, and analysis for new products and existing assemblies.
  • Apply power conversion theory to optimize performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Design and analyze power-electronics systems, including IGBT-based topologies and high-frequency switching.
  • Develop and optimize high-frequency busbar designs with skin-effect considerations.
  • Support R&D initiatives including concept development and early-stage electrical design.
  • Conduct CFD/CFX analysis to evaluate cooling and thermal performance.
  • Design and validate electronics cooling strategies for high-power assemblies.
  • Contribute to sustaining engineering, cost-reduction projects, and ECR processes.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and internal partners to resolve design challenges and improve manufacturability.
  • Work with Applied partners and project teams across multiple communities in the region.
