Job summary

HIA-LI in Hauppauge, NY seeks an Electrical Design Engineer with 5–10 years of experience in designing low- and medium-voltage switchgear and power distribution equipment. You will translate customer specifications into manufacturable designs, produce one-line diagrams, layouts, and BOMs, and support production through release.

The role requires proficiency with 2D/3D CAD, knowledge of applicable standards, and strong problem-solving and communication skills for cross-functional collaboration

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
• 5–10 years designing low- or medium-voltage switchgear, switchboards, or power distribution equipment.
• Working knowledge of UL 891 and/or UL 1558, NEC, NEMA, and ANSI/IEEE standards.
• Experience preparing one-line diagrams and performing short-circuit and protective device selection/coordination.
• Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD (AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks, Inventor) and Microsoft Office.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to manage multiple projects in an engineered-to-order environment.
• Clear written and verbal communication with customers, production, and management.

Responsibilities

• Design low- and medium-voltage switchgear, switchboards, and power distribution assemblies per UL 891/1558 and customer specs.
• Prepare one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, layouts, and bills of materials.
• Perform short-circuit, coordination, and protective device calculations; select breakers and metering transformers.
• Ensure designs comply with NEC, NEMA, ANSI/IEEE standards; support UL reviews and witness testing; create CAD models and drawings.
• Review customer specs and respond to technical questions with the sales team.
• Support production on the floor; disposition nonconformances; drive design changes to reduce cost or lead time.
• Write and execute test protocols and final test reports; contribute to standards and templates.
