Job description

Arlington, VA | Hybrid | 4–13 Years Experience

About the Role

An established MEP engineering consulting firm in Arlington, VA is seeking a motivated Electrical Design Engineer with approximately 4–13 years of electrical building systems design experience.

This opportunity is well suited to an engineer who wants to remain heavily involved in hands-on electrical design while gradually taking on greater responsibility for project coordination, client interaction, and project management.

The firm works across a diverse portfolio of commercial, institutional, multifamily residential, and growing healthcare projects, giving engineers exposure to multiple building types rather than limiting them to a single market.

The successful candidate will work closely with experienced senior engineers and project managers while taking increasing ownership of day-to-day design and project responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design electrical systems for commercial, institutional, multifamily residential, and healthcare-related buildings
  • Design and develop power distribution and lighting systems
  • Perform electrical calculations, equipment selection, and system sizing
  • Develop single-line diagrams, panel schedules, electrical plans, and specifications
  • Perform site surveys and field investigations
  • Coordinate electrical designs across mechanical, electrical, plumbing, architectural, and other project disciplines
  • Apply applicable electrical, energy, and building codes
  • Develop and coordinate construction documents using Revit and AutoCAD
  • Participate in client meetings and project coordination
  • Support projects through design and construction administration
  • Review submittals, respond to RFIs, and assist with construction-phase issues
  • Assist with managing project schedules, budgets, and deliverables as experience allows
  • Delegate work and provide technical guidance to junior engineers
  • Develop toward increased project management and client-facing responsibility
Qualifications
  • 4–13 years of electrical building systems design experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • Experience within an MEP consulting engineering environment strongly preferred
  • Experience designing electrical systems for commercial, institutional, multifamily residential, healthcare, or similar building projects
  • Strong understanding of power distribution and lighting design
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical and building codes, including the NEC
  • Revit experience strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams
  • Previous experience with client interaction, project coordination, mentoring, schedules, or budgets is beneficial
  • Ability to travel to project sites and conduct site surveys
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship
Why Consider This Opportunity?
  • Join a well-established MEP consulting firm with approximately 60 years in the industry
  • Diverse portfolio of commercial, institutional, multifamily residential, and growing healthcare projects
  • Opportunity to avoid being siloed into one project type or market
  • Remain hands-on with electrical design while building project management experience
  • Clear progression across technical design, project management, and leadership
  • Opportunity to take greater ownership as the firm develops its next generation of engineering leaders
  • Direct access to experienced senior engineers and principals for training and mentorship
  • Opportunity to mentor and train junior engineers
  • Collaborative, multidisciplinary MEP environment
  • Hybrid flexibility following the initial onboarding period
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities
  • 401(k) with company contributions
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision options
The Opportunity

This position is particularly well suited to an electrical engineer who has developed a strong technical foundation and is ready to move beyond being solely a designer.

The role provides the opportunity to remain heavily involved in electrical design while progressively taking ownership of site visits, project coordination, client communication, junior engineer development, schedules, and deliverables.

For someone looking to build a long-term career within MEP consulting, there is a clear path toward project management, senior-level responsibility, and ultimately firm leadership.
