Position Overview
We are seeking a Mid to Senior-Level Electrical Engineer to join an established and growing MEP consulting engineering team in the Chicago area.
This position is ideal for an Electrical Engineer with experience designing electrical systems for buildings who is looking to take on greater project responsibility and work across a diverse range of facility types, including K-12 education, healthcare, municipal, industrial, residential, religious, and retail projects.
The successful candidate will be involved throughout the full project lifecycle, from initial design and engineering calculations through construction documents and construction administration.
Responsibilities
- Design electrical systems for new construction, renovations, additions, and facility upgrades
- Develop normal and emergency power distribution systems
- Design interior, exterior, site, and specialty lighting systems
- Design and coordinate fire alarm, communications, security, sound/paging, and low-voltage systems
- Perform electrical load calculations and equipment sizing
- Prepare electrical drawings, specifications, schedules, and construction documents
- Ensure designs comply with the NEC, applicable building codes, and industry standards
- Coordinate electrical systems with architectural, mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, and structural disciplines
- Participate in client meetings and communicate with architects, contractors, owners, and other project stakeholders
- Perform site surveys and field investigations of existing facilities
- Provide construction administration support, including submittal reviews, RFIs, and field observations
- Manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers
- Assist with project management and client relationship responsibilities based on experience
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- Approximately 5–15+ years of electrical engineering experience
- Previous experience within an MEP, architectural/engineering, or consulting engineering firm
- Strong background in electrical systems for commercial and institutional buildings
- Experience with power distribution, lighting, emergency power, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC)
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Revit
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to coordinate effectively within multidisciplinary project teams
- Experience managing projects and mentoring junior staff is a plus
- EIT or PE license preferred, particularly for senior-level candidates
