Job summary

Uni-Systems Engineering in Plymouth, MN is seeking a motivated Junior Electrical Controls Engineer to grow technical skills under senior guidance. You will assist with design and programming of PLCs/HMIs, participate in reviews, and support testing, debugging, and commissioning of electrical control systems across diverse projects. Qualifications

  • U.S. person under ITAR due to access to export-controlled data.
  • ABET-accredited Electrical/Systems/Computer Engineering degree preferred or equivalent experience.
  • E.I.T. credential or eligibility to pursue FE exam is a plus.
  • 0-2 years of applicable experience.
  • Exposure to PLCs, I/O, HMIs, VFDs, servo drives or other motor controllers.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of control software design documentation and programming.

Responsibilities

  • Attend design reviews with contractors and project teams and help prepare status updates.

Electrical Controls Engineer (Junior)-Plymouth, MN

Job Summary

We are looking for a motivated Junior Electrical Engineer who is eager to grow their skills and contribute to our project teams. Every project is different, so we’re looking for someone with a creative, customer-focused mindset and the drive to learn and take on new challenges as they arise.

The person in this role will build foundational engineering skills while contributing to electrical design under the guidance of senior engineers and project leads. They will support multiple aspects of projects including planning, design, documentation, programming, purchasing, integration, testing, training, and commissioning of electrical control systems.

This position will assist with the design and programming of control systems involving PLCs, developing analytical and technical problem-solving skills while working closely with the project team. This role works under regular supervision and guidance, with growing autonomy as skills and experience develop.

Job Responsibilities
  • Assist with concept and engineering design development of electrical control systems under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Participate in schematic design, electrical panel design, PLC and HMI programming, industrial LAN networks design, field installation, and project commissioning.
  • Attend and contribute to scheduled design reviews with contractors, architects, engineering consultants, and other project team members, and help prepare project status updates for Project Review and other company meetings.
  • Support the development, execution, and review of prototype testing and debugging of control systems for new assemblies/structures.
  • Visit manufacturing/vendor sites, as needed, to inspect and test components before shipping to jobsite.
  • Interface with field personnel and purchasing to help determine and obtain required components.
  • Build knowledge of advanced technology in control software and hardware development, and develop basic electrician abilities and knowledge of applicable codes (N.E.C., etc.).
  • Support senior engineers throughout the design-build process, including design, production, and installation of a project.
Job Requirements
  • Must qualify as a U.S. person under ITAR due to access to export-controlled technical data.
  • B.S. Degree from an ABET accredited institution in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Computer Engineering is preferred, or equivalent coursework and experience in control system design and programming.
  • E.I.T. credential, or eligibility and willingness to pursue the F.E. exam, is a plus.
  • 0-2 years of applicable experience.
  • Exposure to PLCs, I/O, HMIs, VFDs, servo drives, or other motor controllers through coursework, internships, or prior work experience.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of control system software design documentation and programming.
  • Exposure to designing for functional safety is a plus.
  • Eagerness to work with client input to help creatively solve engineering problems.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical diagrams.
  • Foundational understanding of industrial automation and electrical control systems.
  • Basic understanding of the characteristics of 3-phase motors and their control, both electromechanical and electronic, as well as commonly used sensors and measuring loops.
  • Familiarity with Rockwell (Studio 5000) PLC programming is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of computer architecture, networking, and operating systems.
  • General awareness of the National Electrical Code.
  • General knowledge of mechanical systems is a plus.
  • A logical mind and an aptitude for problem solving.
  • Willingness to research, learn, and apply new technologies with guidance from senior staff.
  • Eagerness to contribute ideas and openness to feedback and coaching.
  • Ability to manage time and meet assigned deadlines.
  • Developing skills in solving electrical design problems involving motor control and automation, load calculations, programming, and related activities.
  • Basic PLC programming skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work successfully within a team, cross-functionally, and independently as skills develop.
  • May be required to travel up to 15% of the time.
