Job summary

Sonoco Products Company is seeking an Electrical Controls Engineer to maintain, upgrade, and optimize automation systems for its Industrial Products Division. The role collaborates with maintenance, engineering, and operations to improve safety, reliability, and productivity and to lead control system upgrades.

The position is located in Hartsville, SC, with flexible relocation or travel to Charlotte, NC, Columbia, SC, Raleigh, NC, and Greenville, SC as needed.

Qualifications

• Four-year degree in electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering; electrical preferred.
• Experience with PLC programming: ladder logic, diagrams, and structured text.
• Experience with Rockwell or Siemens systems; knowledge of field instrumentation and valves.
• Experience with HMI, DCS, and networked control systems.
• AutoCAD skills for power plans, single lines, and control diagrams.

Responsibilities

• Act as project lead for automation and control projects.
• Collaborate with engineers, operations, maintenance and contractors to meet scope, budget and schedule.
• Create documentation for bidding, installation, start-up and maintenance of control systems.
• Provide commissioning and startup support for controls projects.
• Develop and maintain a project funnel for automation and control upgrades.
• Work with plant process engineers to optimize control system performance.
• Provide direction to the maintenance team on control work orders.
• Train the maintenance team on new and existing automation and control systems.
• Troubleshoot alongside the maintenance team during system upsets.
