Job summary

Sonoco is seeking an Electrical Controls Engineer to maintain and upgrade automation for its Industrial Products Division. You will partner with maintenance, engineering and operations to improve safety, reliability and productivity while leading control-system upgrades.

Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering required; PLC programming with Rockwell/AB and Siemens preferred; experience with AC/DC drives, HMI, DCS, and AutoCAD; travel will be needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in electrical, mechanical or chemical engineering; electrical preferred.
• Experience with PLC programming including ladder logic, function diagrams, and structured text.
• Knowledge of Rockwell/AB and Siemens PLCs; AC/DC drives; HMI; DCS and process controls.
• Autocad skills for power plans, control diagrams; strong communication.

Responsibilities

• Act as project lead for automation and control projects.
• Collaborate with engineers, maintenance, operations, and contractors on scope, budget, and schedule.
• Create documentation for bidding, installation, startup, and maintenance of control systems.
• Provide commissioning and startup support for controls projects.
• Develop and maintain a project funnel for automation upgrades.
• Work with process engineers to optimize control performance.
• Guide maintenance on controls-related work orders; train team on new systems.
• Troubleshoot system upsets with maintenance staff.
